For my last Definitions post the term "Socialism" was defined and discussed...

Capitalism, although not generally considered a political ideology, is often spoken of as the other side of the coin to socialism...

This week I invite members to offer their personal definitions of the term "capitalism"...

What defines capitalism?

Is it truly anathema to socialism (and vice versa)?

What are the benefits of the capitalist systems?

Keep your own money and make more of it. Taxation is major detriment to Capitalism, same as confiscation of wealth by governments. It's your money if you made and it is your decision to make on how to spend it either making more or helping those in need that YOU think are deserving. Investing creates new jobs and new wealth for others and hope that they will learn how to do it also.

I find tbe statement "Taxation is major detriment to Capitalism" of interest...

What taxes (if any) would you (personally) have the government apply... And at what rates?

We practice Capitalist Socialism and have for years. Whenever the government intervenes to help a certain segment of society is practical socialism - such as subsidies for the oil and gas industry. We have billions of dollars in grants to pay for - socialism.

The only real difference is...........................conservatives object to spending tax dollars to help private citizens, such as the poor, ill and elderly.................but applaud helping corporations to make more money........................by preying on the poor, ill and elderly.

Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers at every level of Government, agree that helping large corporations and the wealthy is vital, not for the betterment of Americans as a whole....................but because that's where THIER extra money comes from in the form of campaign financing and lavish lobbying ( read: bribes ).

Capitalistic Socialism... That is a fascinating term... I agree that government aid often finds its way to the private sector... I am less in agreement with the idea that corporations prey on the poor, sick and elderly... Perhaps a qualifier is needed...

Who do you think pays the trillions in profit? You can't believe that all that money comes from other wealthy folk.

Not all... The majority would come from the middle and lower classes...

I consider myself to be a capitalist. I bid jobs to make money. I push the limits as to what the market will allow in order to make the best profit that I can from the work I do. I often compete with other capitalists who are after the same job. I think we all push our luck but someone usually wins the bid and does the job. Once I have secured the job it is then up to me to do a good job and also most importantly --Do what I say I am going to do. It doesn't matter if you are doing the same job for $500 or $5000--do what you say you are going to do and you will be alright and people will call you back. That's my buisness model and it has provided well for me for years now. I never advertise and most of my work is repeat customers and word of mouth.

I love that work ethic... And the p***e that goes with it... Seems to me that fewer and fewer people take p***e in their ability to do a job well; and more and more place a greater emphasis on what the job pays...

When it comes to my family I am a Socialist. I suffer so they don't have to. I am the one who is out in the weather and pushing my physical strength and mental ability.. They in turn enjoy the results of my labor. They eat good have decent clothing-- a home to live in and entertainment. They only have to please me to receive the benefits I supply. My wife cares for the home and children and makes sure I am fed on time and my clothing is ready to wear. The children do their school work and show me love in return for what I do for them. It gives me a contented feeling and our socialist system works.

Christians help people without taxation, people truly in need and without prejudice! Socialism enables the lazy people to have a life of entitlement! Two classes are created the very rich who become the dictators and the very poor who become s***es!!

Historically christian churches have tithed their followers... And it has not always been voluntary... And christian charity has a tendency to work as a proselytizing tool (not that that makes it any less charitable..)

How would you define capitalism?

only sales taxes on sales of NEW merchandise no including food or medication needed by citizens. Originally no citizen could taxed by the Federal Government. Income tax was created in 1913 illegally.
The removal from commerce by taxing wages and income reduces the potential for even greater growth and production to greater benefit Citizens.

Interesting and well stated... Would you agree to corporate taxes? Or property taxes?
Should inheritance be taxed?
