New Gun Bill Would Require Buyers To Reveal Social Media History

This democrat may be a "progressive" but he is no liberal.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Before Nicholas Cruz k**led 17 people at Florida’s Parkland High School last year he posted images of guns, bullets and a dead frog on Instagram. And before former Marine Ian David Long gunned down 12 last year at a California bar he posted on Facebook, “I hope people call me insane.”

“This is something my community is demanding action on,” said Rep. Daniel Didech (D-Buffalo Grove).

That’s why Didech is proposing gun buyers reveal their public social media accounts to Illinois police before they’re approved for a firearm license.

“A lot of people who are having mental health issues will often post on their social media pages that they’re about to hurt themselves or others,” Didech said. “We need to give those people the help they need.”

Pro-gun groups are outraged.

“When people look at this everyone who has a Facebook account or email account or Twitter account will be incensed or should be,” said Richard Pearson with the Illinois State Rifle Association.

But the ACLU is opposed as well.

Rebecca Glenberg with ACLU Illinois says the bill “doesn’t say anything about how that list will be retained and for how long and what uses it might be put to.”

The first amendment group worries police scanning social media may show bias.

“A person’s political beliefs, a person’s religious beliefs, things that should not play a part in whether someone gets a FOID card,” Glenberg said.

But Didech isn’t deterred.

“It gives Illinois State Police additional tools to make sure that dangerous weapons aren’t getting into the hands of dangerous people,” he said.

Didech says his bill is a less intrusive version of a similar measure that’s been proposed in New York state. That version allows police to recover a gun license applicant’s entire browsing history. Even Didech says that goes too far.

I think your suggestion is much more practical.

Edit: Of course that would require cooperation and a report feature, we can't expect them to inspect every element of everyone's account on a daily basis. That or actively inspecting each new image added and AI to watch for certain word combinations in posts and another to monitor crosslinks of "shares" and maybe likes on other pages.

I believe in the 2nd amendment, within reason, those that are likely to commit a mass shooting should not be permitted to buy a gun and/or have the ones they already have confiscated BEFORE they commit the mass murder if/when we can get to them in time.

Typically the guns used in mass shootings are legally registered guns, those used to commit other crimes are usually NOT legally registered guns. Mass shooters don't expect to survive so they are less concerned with getting away with it. Of course there are exceptions to every rule so...

Many suffering from depression will never do anything to harm themselves or others, not everyone suffering from depression is suicidal or homicidal. Also, many medicines used for treating depression have other, non-depression related uses as well.

I think we should jail every single Congressman taking the real criminals off the street as you can't name one that hasn't broken his oath. Democrats break their oath every time they v**e. Republicans 80% of the time. All you know what your right and duty when it comes to these criminals but we let them get away with murder.

Some pissed off peckerwood fired from his job with a history of violence was allowed to buy a gun that he used to k**l five people and shoot five police officers. I guess you think this was just an unavoidable accident. Do you realy think the price of freedom is accepting mass slaughter?

Michigan is an open carry state. Anyone can walk down any street in Detroit with 2 desert eagles strapped to their belt and a streetsweaper shotgun slung over their shoulder. Obviously Detroit is the safest city in the nation! Your theory is as full of holes as your head is.
