Plant your taters in the springtime----Take advantage of the early morning dew---All you need is water and some sunshine---and there'll be baskets full of taters just for you-----Baked and boiled and fricasseed there's a spud for every need----There's nothing that a tater cannot do---Eat your taters and you won't catch the flu-----Always eat your taters Sunday morning it's the patriotic thing you oughta do---If you don't eat your taters you're a dirty rotten t*****r and you don't want folks to think that way 'bout you---If you don't eat your taters shame on you.

You know, you do not even need to dig holes to plant them. All you need is old straw.... you do not need to dig them up in the fall, just move the straw and you will have bushels of potatoes all nicely formed if they get consistent water. Have you heard of Hugelkultur
gardening.... no weeding and drought tolerant. Works well and not a lot of work...

It is soooooooooooo easy to plant and harvest. You can plant almost anything this way, except carrots which needs deeper dirt. But, tomatoes, beans, peas, cucumbers, pumpkins... even corn does well. I have not plowed my garden in years and each year there is surplus....! And another plus, you can simply toss in your compostable material just don't bury meat products in the Hugelkultur ... but grass, peelings, leaves, branches from trees, egg shells, and so on.... even cardboard. And... no weeds to pull! Here is a link to some info on how it is done.

Where can I learn more about this? I am a country girl but live in a small city now and would love to grow tomato plants in my backyard this spring/summer.

If you do not have the time or inclination to use the Hugelkultur method, because it does need to be started the year before you plant, there is the Ruth Stout method. A few bags of soil and a couple bales of hay....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfi-n0Oq38E Each year, as you add more straw or hay, your crops will get better and bigger. From the start, you will not need to dig holes or pull weeds. And if you are selective, you will not need to build fences.... plant the foods deer and rabbits eat in the center and on the edges plant your peppers and herbs. Another tip, collect plastic jugs (store bought milk gallon) and use them (cut out the bottom) to place over plant (without the lid) for early spring tomato plants. No SD from frost.

I've heard you can plant potatoes inside old tires for the mounds and then pick up the tires when harvesting. Never tried it though. I always bought a pound of sulfer from the drug store and dipped the cut up seed spuds in the sulphur to prevent disease. I planted rows of Golden Yukons when we lived in Wyoming. What a great potato. I really miss gardening. I miss many things now but have a lifetime full of wonderful memories shared for 56 years with my adorable wife.

My sister has been using that tire method for several years now, and she tells me it works great. No digging like we had to do when we were kids.
