Trump and the shameless society: Which came first?

I thought wrongly so that it wasn't possible that trump would become president because he was so apparently immoral. Surely most people would see what was do obvious to me. I didn't even question the possibility that they didn't care. They just wanted to make more money and to keep aliens out.
How did this happen to our society? Lies count, t***h is avoided at all costs, money is magic, foreigners excluded and shame and dignity have no place. I am saddened beyond measure.

Morning Bob...
Here goes...

Quote:
"before the president once again commandeered the conversation with his “Put up this wall!” speech,"
Shading... Serves no true purpose to further the story, but leaves one in no doubt as to the bias of the writer...

Quote:
"emulating the Russians who worked on behalf of Donald Trump in 2016"
Conjecture... But presented as fact... Not even the attempt to add a qualifier...

Quote:
"whereas moderate Republicans in Alabama number about 50."
Humorous, but lacking any true value.. Would contend that it undermines the very argument the article is trying to make.

Quote:
"In Trump’s America, taking personal responsibility for anything you say or do is suddenly out of vogue, no matter which side you’re on or how petty the issue."
Assigning blame... How personally responsible...

Quote:
"Maybe some of this is a backlash against the last administration, when critics mocked President Obama for apologizing constantly to the world on America’s behalf."
Assigning more blame... Very deviously as well...

Quote:
"But there’s no doubt that a lot of the cultural shift has to do with the Trump Effect"
Note the use of qualifiers in the preceding examples... But here there is 'no doubt'...

Quote:
"The president lies with such reflexive regularity that his doctors must consider it a vital sign, and yet I can’t recall a single instance of his admitting a misstatement. He taunts like a child, but never — and I mean never — does he demonstrate anything resembling shame."
Certainly not attempting to remain impartial...

Quote:
"all of us in the media would stop jumping up and down screaming like an asteroid was headed for the planet, and Trump’s presidency would become vastly less gratifying for his raging supporters."
Gratifying? How so?
Raging supporters... Indeed... How very impartial...

Quote:
"He derives his strength from our inexhaustible moral indignation, and he knows it."
This doesn't even make sense...

Quote:
"which they extol the virtues and selflessness of their Dear Leader as if they had no sense of p***e or self-worth"
No conjecture here... Just good, solid journalism...

Quote:
"It doesn’t seem to trouble officials like Kirstjen Nielsen, the homeland security secretary, or Sarah Sanders, the press secretary, when they’re caught using specious statistics about terrorists crossing the border."
Agreed...

Quote:
"And so Democrats have decided that shame is a luxury they can’t afford, either. "
Generalizing...

Quote:
"Last week, a guy in a shopping plaza parking lot swerved around me to steal a space, and we exchanged a few words. Waiting in line at the dry cleaner, he then let loose a string of insults, calling me “short” (true) and “ugly” (arguable). All while his son, who looked to be about 13, stood by, smiling uncomfortably."
Irrelevant to the piece... An attempt to make the writer appear a victim...And a reasonable person...

Quote:
"We created the moment, and he merely filled the void."
A bit of a digression from the beginning of the article...

Quote:
"Jones, the senator whose campaign was supposed to benefit from this chicanery, has done just that, saying he will file a complaint of his own with federal e******n officials. Good for him."
Good for him... Did the writer similarly applaude Trump looking into v***r f***d after he won the e******n?

Quote:
"And maybe challengers for the presidency next year — in both parties, should it come to that — can find a way to put personal accountability above the roaring approval of the online mob.
Because you’re not getting it right if you can’t admit when you’ve gotten it wrong. And you can’t boast of morality if you’ve no sense of shame."
Still the best part of the article...

This was fun...
I couldn't follow the link so was unable to see who wrote the piece...
As an opinion piece it would be fine... But not worthy of the moniker 'journalism'...
Some parts were quite amusing... It constantly amazes me how rude a petson can be while retaining the facade civility...

Hope you have a good day...

Control and power is the driving force for both parties and neither work with honesty and integrity.. Somewhere along the line we gave up principals ... Society now paying the piper~~~ Where there is no society soon enough there is no nation...

Agreed!

I’ve often said that we could solve nearly all, if not all, problems with our politicians, no matter party affiliation, if they were held responsible for their lies (and particularly their campaign promises). Imagine if Obama was held financially responsible for saying you could keep your doctor? The mind boggles. Imagine if he’d said, “we hope you can keep your doctor, but it’s nit likely.” He would be off the hook, but, Would he have been able to sell it with that much t***h?

What we need to do, collectively, is hold our own politicians accountable. Until and unless we negate this culture that “politicians lie”, we’ll be stuck with what we get.

It’s like our politicians have their own unwritten Taqiyya: they can say anything at all if it works to get them in office or keep them in favor of the people. This mindset has got to end, or our country is just a lie.
