Time to breakout the sugar water feeders folks.
They are early this year and aren't here usually till the Lilacs are in bloom. Maybe that means the warm weather is finally here for good. Yaaaa!

Yes , beautiful. I haven't seen the BE's this spring. They usually sit in the very top of the tallest evergreens and stare out at the water in the lake. Love to watch them fish.

I don't know how they don't break their necks some times.
I had one that stunned itself in the greenhouse and I had it in my gloved hand for about 5 minutes until it got its bearings again and flew off.

Similarly I had one that had been trapped in a shed with a sky light for who knows how long. It exhausted itself trying to fly out of the sky light until it crashed in a tiny heap. I gathered it up, held it one palm, and fed it drops of food and water off the tip of my finger from the other hand. It took long time, but eventually it gathered enough strength to fly away. Amazing little creatures!

Years ago one flew into my office which was a bare new one with a coffee clutch only as the new paint and carpet were just completed. It couldn't find the open door so kept flying into the window. Got close several times but he'd fly off just as I was getting near. When he was totally exhausted
I was able to pick him up. Filled a coffee cup with sugar water. He laid in my open hand on his side. I placed the cup close to his mouth. I knew they had long tongues but had no idea how long. Kept my hand open the entire time. Within a few minutes he was rested and fueled up. Watching him zoom off was good.

Ahh you guys are people after my own heart.
Guess how you get a bat out of the house (Great room has about 20 foot high ceilings) Take an old cottage cheese container and a butter knife and scratch the bottom with the opening directed towards the open door from across the room and they can radar the opening in the door when the scratch noises hit the walls. That was a 2:00 in the morning fiasco when my 80 year old Mom started screaming. My Mother giggled for two days re visioning my hubby standing there in his boxers holding Remi 12 guage. He thought someone was in the house. He's a city boy.

I saw one video where a man evidently had a small cup of sugar water in his closed fist with an opening by his thumb and forefinger and a hummingbird would land on his thumb and drink the sugar water out of the cup. The hummingbird would come in land and drink for awhile and then fly off. Someone was behind him and was recording the whole thing.

That would be so cool. I have had them come and stare at me about a foot from my face but that's about it. I bet that took years for him to get them to trust him.

Why don't you try it as it may work for you also. They didn't say how long it took to train them or anything. The hummingbirds may be attracted to the sugar water and lose their fear over hunger. Who knows?

Maybe I will try. I don't know if it will work since my 2 dogs are always right there at my side. They don't like to be inside when Im outside.

It will depend on your dogs. If they are the kind that bark at everything, you can pretty much forget it, but if they are quite, then it won't take as long as you think.

You must live up north if they are just getting there. They have been here for awhile now in Southern Georgia. I love them and always leave food out for them. They do get dependent on you though of there are not a lot of flowers around.
