Prior to the ratification of the 17th amendment, the state legislatures selected the two senators that would represent the state in the US senate. The idea was that those elected to serve in state assemblies and legislatures were far more informed in what the particular state's needs were. They were far more in tune with the state's economic, social, cultural and environmental circumstances, and they were intimate with the rights of the citizens of the state. On that basis, the state legislators chose senators who were also well informed in the individual state's needs.

The 17th amendment took the authority to choose senators out of the hands of the legislatures and put in the hands of the v**ers, most of whom had no clue what their state's needs or circumstances actually were. Probably 80% of the v**ers today are uninformed, politically illiterate, and many are poorly educated. A lot of them are just plain stupid and quite selfish.

Take Nevada for instance. There are 17 counties in the state, two of them, Clark and Washoe, control the politics in the state. The population of these two counties is nearly 3 times that of the other 15 counties combined. Ironically, the majority of residents in Clark and Washoe counties are hard core liberals who went there to escape the oppressive policies and taxation in their former home state, like California, and so the morons go to Nevada and v**e for more of it.

In the mid-term just past, had the state legislators been able to choose the US senators to represent Nevada, the state would not have gone full blue. Now, Nevada has planted some of the dumbest liberal politicians in the state in offices from governor to the US congress.
