Found this in my grandmothers bible that her mother wrote to her. Written in cursive but I think I can read it. Dearest Tom and Jessie, We got your card sure is the bunk about Tom hurting his back again. I sure hope it is ok by now. Lucille said you were in Spokane and she and Chet are both up there guess they might be home tonite. Chet went up Sunday nite I wanted them to come back yesterday but they didn't. Guess they didn't want to very bad. I would sure love to come don but don't imagine that I can this week. I haven't any thing done to this darn ground here yet. Bill Robinson is supposed to plow it this week. It is going to cost so much to hire the manure hauled and get it plowed and seeded I suppose it will take all summer to get it paid for. I suppose you have your garden in by now. Has Al got his planted? I bet it is pretty up there now. I would like to go up there but it is hard to when I'll ever get to go. Yes my old hen hatched --she has 11 hatched 12 tromped on. Maybe we will have one mess of fried chicken anyway. Hope so. How is yours doing? Have they all hatched? If so you should have quite a bunch. We got our little garden planted --doubt if it will ever grow unless it rains. Gosh it sure seems funny without Chet and Lucille around I miss them so. I got a letter from Lucile and she said the Doctor thought Cece was some better. They claimed it was her heart that causes the trouble. I do hope he can help her. I wish she would quit and come home for a while. What were they all doing when you were up there? Have they heard any more from Ray? I haven't heard any more from Wilda. I wrote to her last week but she don't write much. Guess she is busy. I looked for Carl and Melba sunday but they never showed up. I haven't wrote to them either about going down there on decoration day have you? Gosh but the wind and dust was fierce here Sunday. Did it blow in Spokane? We said if it was bloing up the you would catch it going home. We couldn't have a spark of fire the smoke just drove us out. We haven't washed this week thought I might as well wait till the kids got home. We are so short of any thing to burn I hardly know how we manage sometimes. Here it is Thursday and I haven't mailed you a letter. Chet got home yesterday but Lucille hasn't come yet and am I ever mad. I would like to know what she is doing. Chet said she would be home on the Stage last nite but she didn't show up. Chet and Bill Robinson is hauling the manure this morning. Did you get your potatoes to plant? I would like to plant some but I guess I will have to let them go. I haven't any seed. This isn't very good weather on our little chickens or garden either. Well guess I will quit and get to work. When are you guys coming up? Have you got the cow to milk yet? Write at once and let us know how Toms back is. I hope it is all ok. My old Rheumatism is about ok. Guess it was just some disturbance from those darn Small pox. Well we are losing our doctor again-- he is leaving today and going away to school in Spokane. Love to all Mom

People may not have had much , but they did make time for each other. Even taking the time to write a letter.

Yes they did. They made bread because you could not buy it. My Great grandfather was ailing and Gramma Sally held on by farming and raising a few animals. Grandpappy had been a moonshiner through the prohibition but that was gone now. The postage stamp on the envelope is 3 cents. I have another letter she wrote that I will post later about cattle and land prices.

Tom
you are fortunate to have letters from the past from your grandparents
it's almost like having contact with them
Although I vaguely remember my grandparents on my mothers side
I was too young to be impressed with the relationship
there are no letters for me to read and feel
you have a blessing

I am blessed . I knew all of the folks in her letter and I have an extensive amount of photographs of the old timers on my fathers side. I think I'll post a newspaper article where my dads father was busted selling moon shine
