What is Common Core in education?

Please read this article along with the letter of resignation the teacher wrote where he explains how the profession has left him and other teachers. Also, watch the video which is an interview by someone who doesn't seem to want him talking about the topic.

We are slowly being taken in by Common Core which is nothing but an extension of No Child Left Behind. Actually the carrot, money, that has been extended to schools by the present administration is a bit larger than under the preceding one. At any rate I agree with the writer of the letter that his profession left him long ago.

seems you want to blame liberals for everything,in my state of tennessee, they want to privitaze the schools letting ceos of charter schools suck all the money out of public schools, all they want kids to learn is what republicans want them to so they can pass test. all teachers and kids do now is study for test. in nashville they have 4400 students in charter schools costing 44 million dollars out of public school budget.when nashville first started charter schools they choose the schools, when they turned down one charter school that someone in the state goverment wanted to be let in ,all hell broke loose, they cut off millions of dollars, now the rep. are telling nashville that they will decide which charter schools will open in nashville.

Seems like a good place to start. I gather from your comments you lean a bit to the left. I will say you may not be entirely wrong on the charter school thing. All schools should have the capability to teach at the charter school level in my opinion. When I was in school we had four levels of learning for each grade; (To simplify) A. The top students and their courses were more difficult. B. Good students who were borderline A. students and many moved up to the A. classes. C. Average students, capable of being the blue collar workers, average middle class people of that time. D. Special education students, mostly students who needed help to get through school for wh**ever reason, not all had mental disabilities and many who did not have mental disabilities worked their way up into the other classes.

"all they want kids to learn is what republicans want them to so they can pass test. all teachers and kids do now is study for test."

I don't believe that is just a Republican (as in party) problem, the Marxist/democrats are in it up to their eyebrows too. But the big problem is the colleges and universities are allowed to turn out uneducated graduates brainwashed in c*******m and socialism (future useful i***ts).

I believe a renewed emphasis on the three R's with no breaks given, you either know it or you fail, is the way to go. I also think we need to teach civics as I had to learn it when I was in school. We learned about the founding fathers why and how the Constitution was written (the Articles of Confederation were failing) and the compromises needed to get it written and passed. We learned how our local governments worked, local, county and state. We learned the precinct was the smallest local government entity in most cases.

But most importantly we were taught how other forms of government worked, we studied parliamentary government systems, c*******m, socialism, facism, fuedalism, tribalism and so on. In the end we had a very good overview of how many different forms of government worked and why our Republican form of government was superior to all the others. That's what's missing from education today and I don't know if we have educators capable of teaching in this material.

I am here and could do all the things you mention in the last paragraph since I did it for 25 years. I may have to sit down a bit more while teaching than I used to since I was 53 when I got pushed out for pushing those things you listed. I would really love to take a try at doing this again.
