A friendly note to "Us" conservatives

I have a ground breaking idea and wonder if anyone is interested in trying it... Let's stop doing any "baiting" and refuse in turn to be baited. If we start a post about something a liberal has done, let's not start it with "this stupid libtard", or any other form of h**e speak. If a "libtard" tries baiting with h**e filled speech, address the issue and ignore the bait.
Just saying, I'm interested in seeing what would happen if we simply refused to take the bait and remained even and diplomatic. Ever see a cop stand a line and not knock the s**t out of someone calling him a pig or even spitting on him? He is the biggest man in the crowd, regardless of physical stature. I know I have been baited here in the past (and we all know who the master baiter is on the forum) and "rose" to that bait, but am willing to give is a shot. Think anything would change over time? What the heck, it might just be an interesting experiment.

I have been trying that for some time -don't always succeed in the needed self discipline - and will continue trying - many times it is difficult to stay on the issue, however, when the response to a post is purely personal.

What an excellent idea. I have often asked for people to stop using terms like libtard and teabagger, but few have ceased doing it. Some of the things I would like to say have fallen in that category, but I have tried to refrain from using them, as they accomplish nothing. Let the "progressives" use them, but stay on target.

Yes, we all know who the masterbator is, don't we?

Nice idea but doubtfully workable because pig-calling is built into the RWE ideology...if one eliminated calling O c****e, muslim, h**er of America, and other such lies RWEs wouldn't have anything to say. The problem isn't just rudeness to fellow posters--it's twisted rudeness and crudeness about politics and political figures. It's built in with right wing extremism and its sense of absolutism. The personal rudeness is obvious to OPP posters...the political rudeness and crudeness appears to be less obvious but is the larger problem. In the end it is even more wrong and counterproductive to political discussion.

I agree 100%, just trying to better myself and am wondering if others are interested. There are those who do this routinely and I truly respect them for their maturity.

I prefer the term "knee-jerk", as in when the doctor hits you with the little hammer. It's very hard to stop that reflex but can be done. I do think it's funny that you only called out RWE's as you call them, I find there are just as many LWE knee-jerk responders, if not more, than RWE; but maybe that's just the view from different sides of the fence.

Edit: btw, I have no respect for either L or R knee-jerk "thinkers". Too much of the problem in America today has come from people blindy accepting what their particular party head has preached verses taking the time to research an issue and come to one's honest own opinion.

I agree with you. I have some Liberal friends and there nothing like the group from the left here. I don't believe you can educate them. There just to busy trying to protect there free ride.

The extremists do indeed have their own opinion...the problem is that they're absolutist in opinion. I've also noticed the left wing commenters on OPP--the difference is they tend to be less absolute in opinion, less ideological. I regard extremism and absolutist thinking as failing to take realities of times and circumstances into account. An example is s***ery as a wrong, segregation as a wrong but with consideration of times and circumstances involved understandable though wrong in principle. We and the larger world are richer in civilization in having experienced and overcome this wrong. The realities of s***ery, of segregation, of integration are difficult to discuss reasonably because we focus only on the immediate wrongs and rights and difficulties involved.

Appeal to intelligence and reason rather than h**e mongering? I'm in. I've often tried to 'take the high road' in discussions, only to be called 'right wing loonie', 'brainwashed Repubtard', and other similarly colorful expressions. That seems to be the 'go to' response when intellect fails. It is infuriating in that, in discussion of a topic, I prefer to stay on topic. My many attempts at seeking solutions via agreeing on common ground and finding solutions equitable to all have been met with reasonless h**e speech and slanderous accusation. When that happens, I withdraw, rather than be insulted. That is my fault. In the future, I will endeavor to 'stick to the issues' and (try to) appeal to intelligence. Thank you for your post. It needed to be said.

And we'll continue to be called names for a while (and occasionally again in the future) but possibly by continuing and simply ignoring rude posts while responding to others will eventually frustrate those who simply haven't bothered to attempt civil discourse. And what the heck, who isn't big enough to take a few little names. I fully expect I'll be the first to blow it in this experiment with a tirade but will do my best! ;-)

I'm stunned that you'd write something that pretends rude insults are the sole province of right wingers, you can't possibly believe that true, can you?

There are those on both left and right who spew foul discourse, but many thoughtful, intelligent posters as well. Perhaps reasonable discourse will win the day.
