Iggy Rat Loc: Lost in America

"A patriot without religion in my estimation is as great a paradox as an honest Man without the fear of God. Is it possible that he whom no moral obligations bind, can have any real Good Will towards Men? Can he be a patriot who, by an openly vicious conduct, is undermining the very bonds of Society?....The Scriptures tell us "righteousness exalteth a Nation."

Jesus said those that are not against us are for us. Does that answer your question?

The examples set by many of those who claim to be religious is enough to shake ones faith. What about the rich man and the camel passing through a needle's eye? Remember a guy named Romney? He tried to be president with the support of every churchgoer I know of. Why do churches feel it is OK to encourage citizens to undermine our president? I know they do it. I'm not necessarily advocating atheism but have you heard of the atheist groups that now have their own churches? They are heavily involved in community services in their areas because they feel that churches encourage hypocritical behavior and they want to do what is right by their brothers .Is guilt necessary to get people to do the right thing.? If you don't believe in God no matter what deeds you do it won't matter, right? Man is not capable of managing their religion, at least by what they are taught by others unless of course religion's intent was and is to cause more people to be murdered and persecuted than anything else in history. What about resisting scientific progress in favor of literally t***slating spectacular stories in the bible that have no chance of being true. Is that good for us? Children die because the church down the road believes in prayer to solve medical issues over science. I do believe the morals in the bible are the finest things ever written to guide a person in their life. They should be used as that , a guideline . The twisted t***slations of the commandments ruin the good they could do. You don't need God to have morals.

Iggy, the word, "religion", has many connotations to many people. Personally I don't really care for the term "religion". Some people take religion and turn it into a freak show. Some people use religion as a bludgeon to beat others with. Some people use religion as a crutch and an excuse for all sorts of things. I had a grandfather who was a religion bully - to the extent I finally parted with him forever. I didn't perceive him as having a religious bone in his body.

I believe the comment you posted above has nothing to do with religion, but with morality, principles. Of course a good patriot does not have to be religious - but he must be of a good moral character and a man of principles. For a nation to survive, its citizens must have a moral fiber - if that fiber is weakened it will die and that is when a nation dies. I don't believe it is right, moral, or correct to tie all of that to "religion".

I said all of that to say THIS: Our nation is dying because we have lost our moral footing. Our foundation is quickly eroding, and we WILL pay a price for that. Morality, Christianity kept this nation safe for two centuries, but the dark side of humanity is overshadowing the decency and morality - and we are going under if we don't turn things around. I hope I said nothing to offend.

Robert, I appreciate your comment that morals in the Bible are the finest things ever written to guide people in their lives. I use the word "principles" to describe my foundation. I live a principled life. I sometimes miss the mark, but never deliberately so. Too many people have no principles or don't understand living by principles, and those people are in deep need.

Some churches do great good. Some churches do virtually no good, and indeed, do harm. Don't we find that everywhere humans congregate?

I am certainly not offended as it is also my intention not to offend. I have used religion as a broad term for lack of a better term and because I didn't want to single out one .However because I was born and raised in the US Christianity is what I am most familiar with. I know it is not a particular religion as it has been pointed out to me before. If Christianity is what kept us safe before it is what will tear us apart now. Not if and by itself but it's t***slation by men. Christianity has taken down governments before and sadly it appears it will do the same to the US. I wish we had a book of the commandments with nothing more. The rest is what hurts us.

Commandments - an excellent comment. I, too think America would thrive on simple commandments. We don't need the 3 tons of legislation that rots away in the national archives merely to immortalize the politicians with their names on it.

Far from being offended, I appreciate the time and thought that went into the responses. I also agree with you. Even the commandments are extraneous: Love one another. Everything else would evolve from that.

People will always have different ideas and different ways of doing things. And there will always be those who essentially have no conscience - I call it no soul. They will always be a problem, but that is the case no matter what laws we have or do not have. There truly are psychopaths and sociopaths who don't know the feelings of regret or love or guilt. And I don't believe they are that way by choice. I believe their brains are not wired right or that there are some broken synapses within their brains. How to deal with them will always be a problem.

I can heartily applaud that!!

But if all Christians were like my grandfather, accusing everyone, even those in church, of being sinners, if all were like the crazy church (I forget its name), if all were like them, the nation would be destroyed......and I guess this could be called religion k*****g a nation (but actually it would be the crazy people who THOUGHT they were Christian).
