Also they should get the book:
THE PRICE OF VALOR---LIFE OF AUDIE MURPHY (Biography)
It is also available as an audio book so they wouldn't have to find someone to read it to them. I was able to download it free.

Hey there Oldsailor65, I used to know what became of this serious hero but have forgotten. I watched that movie as a youngster and in all honesty it was one of the major influences in my life that pulled me toward a military career. So what ended up happening to Mr. Murphy? Please dont tell me he suicided!

I loved 'Sgt. York' and watch it every time I see it replay of the old movie channels.

Briefly, my favorite story about Audie Murphy: Years, ago, actor Hugh O'Brian was a fast-draw enthusiast. He had a standing challenge to anyone in Hollywood who thought they could outdraw him...$5,000 to the winner. He openly challenged Audie Murphy to a fast-draw contest, presumably thinking that would be a major feather in O'Brian's cap if he won. Murphy was already a legendary figure in the country for his WWII record, and had already starred in a number of western movies.

As the story went (O'Brian publicly confirmed it) Murphy would take the challenge with one caveat...they would use live ammo in the contest. O'Brian, fully aware of Murphy's unmistakably proven demeanor under fire, backed off and let the matter drop. However, reportedly, they formed a lasting friendship. Understandably, O'Brian never challenged him again.

BTW, Audie Murphy's birthplace is only a couple of hours away from me, just NE of Dallas, near Greenville, Texas.

For a confirmation of the above story, check out the 3rd paragraph under 'Hollywood Westerns' at the following:

Our library doesn't have it. We are in the middle of God's country but that doesn't mean there are a lot of libraries or books available here.

On 28 May 1971, Murphy was k**led when the private plane in which he was a passenger crashed into Brush Mountain, near Catawba, Virginia, 20 miles (32 km) west of Roanoke in conditions of rain, clouds, fog and zero visibility.[181] The pilot and four other passengers were also k**led.[182] The aircraft was a twin-engine Aero Commander 680 flown by a pilot who had a private-pilot license and a reported 8,000 hours of flying time, but who held no instrument rating. The aircraft was recovered on 31 May.[183] After her husband died, Pamela Murphy moved into a small apartment and got a clerk position at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Los Angeles, where she remained employed for 35 years.[184] In 1975, a court awarded Murphy's widow and two children $2.5 million in damages because of the accident.[185]
