The U.S. Just Finished 46th in a Press Freedom Contest

This may give the right wingers on the forum a boost, but I think this is important, and we all need to be aware of it.. A true slap in the face of every person who calls this nation home..

I can not get the link to register or copy or wh**ever... The articale can be found on Trov.com and its origin is at the top of the page..

... the heritage of the 1776 constitution was shaken to its foundations during George W. Bush’s two terms as president by the way journalists were harassed and even imprisoned for refusing to reveal their sources or surrender their files to federal judicial officials. There has been little improvement in practice under Barack Obama. Rather than pursuing journalists, the emphasis has been on going after their sources, but often using the journalist to identify them. No fewer that eight individuals have been charged under the Espionage Act since Obama became president, compared with three during Bush’s two terms. While 2012 was in part the year of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, 2013 will be remember for the National Security Agency computer specialist Edward Snowden, who exposed the mass surveillance methods developed by the US intelligence agencies.

We seem to be losing on this basic freedom. I believe a website must exist for fighting this and if anyone knows, I would like to have the link. Not a nutcase site but one that is doing serious work on the problem... thanks...

I have no opinion in general about the U.S. Standing on freedom of press ranking compared to other countries. I have a theory that information technology is rapidly advancing so fast that it won’t be long before no one, no government or corporation will be able to keep a secret. Freedom of press will become an obsolete phrase as any information will be available to anyone who wants it. In a short time, there will be no more secrets.

Excellent example of how issues can be discussed: with sanity and reason, not insults and name calling. Thank you, permafrost. This is a subject that affects Left and Right equally, all Americans. And it is where the entrenched d******eness of those on both sides, a total refusal to listen or work together, is betraying our nation's ideals. Perhaps we can finally come together on this crisis of freedom and from there help to solve the other problems besieging this nation.

The topic here had to do with Freedom of the Press.

As far as your remarks on personal freedom, I guess it varies a lot in America. Depending who you work for, you are going to loose some freedom. If you are a movie star or someone famous, you have fans and photographers stalking you and so you are not so free to move about. If you own a business like say a family restaurant, you aren't going to have a lot of free time if you are going to be successful. I guess freedom is also a state of mind, some people will never feel free no matter how good their life is.

I feel grateful that I am free to travel where ever I want to, live where I want, I have about all I want or need to have. I love my work. I can say what I want with out fear of going to jail. The loss of freedom just seems beyond my grasp of comprehension or experience.

Sorry you have no freedom. I just wonder what situation you are in that has taken away your Freedom?
