Joe Biden has new shoes, and people are asking questions.

The president was filmed walking (and "jogging") across the White House lawn to board Marine One on Wednesday, and while there were several things to note about his appearance, what was on his feet took top billing.

If America were led by a normal president who wasn't in steep physical and mental decline, this probably wouldn't have even been noticed. Perhaps the fashion section of some newspaper would have commented on it, but no one would have cared otherwise. Biden is not a normal president, though, and this has actually been an ongoing saga for him.

Over the last few years, the president has faceplanted multiple times, including boarding Air Force One. The remedy was to have him start using the "short stairs" to limit his exposure. His most infamous fall came later, during a commencement speech at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Sometime around that same time, Biden's handlers made the move to "dress sneakers" with softer soles that are easier to walk in. Comments abounded, noting that he was wearing them even when meeting with world leaders, a time when decorum is usually valued.

Which brings us back to this latest video. Has he made the move to wearing full-blown old-man tennis shoes with suits now? It sure looks like it. Have another look.

If those aren't grandpa’s all-black New Balances or similar, they sure look like them. At this current rate of progression, they are going to be driving him out to the helicopter in a golf cart by the end of the year.

It wasn't just the shoes, though. Early in the video, he actually has to get a running start to make it over the towering transition that is concrete to grass. Perhaps he was just trying to show off his supposed "vigor," but it looked really awkward, as did his gait in general. Biden doesn't just talk like a very old man; he walks like one. The short, choppy steps and off-balance look, coupled with the appearance of constantly stumbling, have become more commonplace since he took office. This is a man who is aging very quickly.

And yet, he's running for re-election anyway. That's the kind of shameless thirst for power that many American politicians have. A sane person would retire and go spend time with their grandkids. Not Biden. He's going to stay in office until extenuating circumstances force him out.

Near the end of 2013, I made a commitment to read the Bible from beginning to end. On December 31, 2014 I fulfilled that commitment. Having done that, I asked my wife if we could start doing this in addition to my personal readings. At of the end of this year, I will have read the Bible in its entirety 15 times while reading the Psalms an additional 2 times and the Gospels an additional 4 times.

This one discipline has single-handedly changed the trajectory of my life. It has carried me through the past 11 years of my relationship with Jesus, has improved my marriage and relationships with others, and further developed my understanding of the Bible including participating in several weekly bible studies and even leading one.

I hope my story of commitment to this discipline will inspire a new generation of Jesus followers to make the Word of God the central piece of their lives. I pray this discipline will become the hub that dictates to them everything else about their lives.

Now if you knew me personally or from what you know of me on OPP, you might say, "Parky, if you truly spent that much time reading and applying the Word of God to your life over the past 11 years, it would seem to me you would be a lot godlier than you actually are."

I agree!

Author Henri Nouwen is someone whom I can relate with. Once someone remarked to him, "Henri, it surprises me that you are not godlier than you are given how much time you have spent with the Lord and His Word in your lifetime." To which Henri responded, "I know, can you imagine how bad of a man I would be had I not spent any time with Jesus and His Word."

My sentiment exactly!

I look at my life and think to myself, I should be godlier! But I can't imagine where I would be today without this discipline of reading and applying God's Word each day.

As I reflect on the past 11 years, I wanted to capture the top ten lessons I have learned from reading the Bible 15 times and here they are:

1. The God of the Old Testament is the same God of the New Testament.
2. God is perfectly Holy throughout the Bible.
3. God is perfect love throughout the Bible and commands us in Leviticus to love one another.
4. The entire Bible is about one person, and His name is Jesus. He is the ONLY way to eternal life.
5. God hates our sin. The shame you feel before repentance is always from God.
6. God always and immediately forgives sin when we repent. Shame you feel after repentance is never from God.
7. God seeks every private means possible to convict us of sin for repentance before He brings judgment in our lives.
8. God's judgement in this life is always to lead us to repentance and restoration.
9. God's kindness to us is never random; it is always for the sake of either showing His goodness to us or to turn us back from our sin.
10. All Scripture is profitable for us. Don't unhook your plow from the Old Testament. Nothing in the entire Bible is a mistake or inconsistent to who God is or unapplicable to our lives today.

My life has been forever changed by my time in the Word and the application of it in my life each day. However, my discipline yesterday in God's Word does not guarantee success tomorrow. The Bible is alive and active like you and me. This is why it is important to read the Bible each day. The writer of Hebrews says it like this:

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:12-13

Every time we read the Bible it is alive and active. It digs into motives, actions, feelings, and thoughts and allows us like the Psalmist to say:

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24

James, the brother of Jesus, said the Word of God is a mirror into our souls. When we read it, we see our true selves if we are willing to hear the prompting of the Spirit inside of us as it mirrors to us our lives through its active counsel. However, as James says, reading it is not enough.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. James 1:22-25

Read God's Word! Apply it every day and you will be blessed by God. It is a promise from God! It has saved me from self-destruction, and it can save you too!

I was truly blessed by your testimony Parky. My favorite verse and I try to live by it every day is Proverbs 3: 5,6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path." when I find it hard to get to sleep or I've awakened and can't get back to sleep, I start saying (thinking) verses I have memorized....the 23rd Psalm....etc. and it lulls me back to sleep with deep content. Every time.

I don’t want to hear how Trump doesn’t care about you. I think it’s pretty clear he cares only for himself.
I don’t want to here about how terrible it is that Russia has encroached on Europe. Of course it did. Trump just told Putin he can “do whatever the hell he wants.” If you voted for him You should have known better.

Don’t want to hear that regulations for our safety and health used to be good for all of us but Trump wants water safety and business rules to be deleted. Yes it would be terrible that your nephew cut off his hand while working in a deli because OSHA rules are gone.

You know something I never see? I never see the average person say that Buddha was made up from stories of ancient pagan gods. Or that Gandhi was actually a Jewish mystic who was misunderstood. Or that Mohammad was an atheist. There’s usually only one historical figure that is distorted more than any other to fit whatever modern agenda they need at the moment: Jesus Christ.

You can get the identity of Buddha, Gandhi, Mohammad, and even other historical figures such as Alexander the Great or Abraham Lincoln wrong, and it does not have any bearing on what that means to you spiritually. In a manner of speaking, who they are is meaningless in this regard. But people would correct you in a hot second if you made a false claim about who they are historically. This is because it’s verifiable to see who these people were, what they did, and what they stood for.

So why do people not hold this same standard to Jesus, the one Person who can affect their spiritual standing before God? I believe there are a few reasons.

1. People Don’t Want Jesus to Be What the Bible Says.

If Jesus is who He says He is, and the Bible is true, then this has consequences. Does it really matter if Buddha wasn’t who He claimed to be? Not really. People might feel a little jaded, but they would believe that their spirituality wouldn’t be in limbo. However, Christianity is different. Jesus’s claim to divinity and the exclusive way to be saved has consequences for humanity. And, quite simply, humans love to run after other gods. They have to turn away from idols and self-worship to turn to the One True God who has the power to save. But that means giving up certain aspects of their lifestyle that are sinful they have grown accustomed to. It brings them death and destruction and they are blinded by it. Jesus says in John 3:19-20 that “Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of the light because their deeds are evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.”

So people make another Jesus that likes what they like, believes what they believe, and approves of what they do.

2. Spiritual Warfare

I don’t find it to be any coincidence at all that it’s specifically Jesus who has all the attention when it comes to the variety of identities. Satan doesn’t care if you say you believe in God. Even he believes that. He doesn’t even care if you believe in Jesus. As long as it’s a false Jesus, one that has no power to save you. This is one of the oldest rules in the devil’s playbook: distort Jesus. His energy goes into fighting truth, not lies. Jesus says Satan is the Father of Lies and that it would be foolish for Satan to cast himself out because then his kingdom wouldn’t stand. He perpetuates the lies and does what he can to distort the truth.

Who cares about the other spiritual figures because they aren’t really his target. If anything, they’re his allies.

3. People See Truth as Hate

We live in an odd time. People don’t want truth. They want affirmation. This is true even outside of religious circles but also exists in casual friendships, families, and work acquaintances. I’m sure people have witnessed other people’s complete lack of humility and perhaps even a complete disconnect from reality, all in the name of “their truth.” They want their voice to be heard. And they make it heard by shutting everyone else up. It’s a grand level of entitlement that is sweeping our nation with a vengeance. So, when you speak up about Jesus and who He really is, as described in the Bible, if it hurts them emotionally or is seen as unloving, then they discard it because it’s hateful. Our culture has a strong view of truth: if it’s not loving, then it’s not true. This is how the average postmodern New Ager sees truth, too, by the way.

So, their guard goes up if they perceive anything that you’re saying as hurtful to them. Ironically, what informs this way of thinking usually comes from a place of hurt. But instead of looking at it as an obstacle to overcome and grow from, people now expect others to cater to their emotional needs with no expectation of themselves to take any responsibility to grow.

False Christ, False Gospel

Ultimately, when people deny truth and who Jesus is, they are embracing a false version of Him who isn’t going to save anybody. They might have some comfort in their denial, but it’s only a comfort that leads to destruction. Stop running from Jesus. Run to Him. Go to the Scriptures and read about who Jesus is. Let the Holy Spirit guide and convict you and lead you to the Living Waters, the Bread of Life, who will give you what you’ve been yearning for.
