I may have already replied to this post later on, but something struck me now. Millions have never served in the military. That service is deeply appreciated. Yet it does not give those who have served a Greater Voice. I was drafted on 12/1/66, having volunteered for that draft out of a college deferment. Not out of patriotism but faith: I wanted to go to Vietnam and refuse to fire my weapon. Very Catholic back then. War, to me at nineteen, was murder, breaking the Commandments. I did very well on tests score to get me out of infantry but refused. I was put in OCS. I did well at Fort Benning but in my 17th week, I punched my platoon Lieutenant, a racist pig that insulted my roomie John Taylor. (And he never liked me, being a Yank.) That they let me resign and be a PFC told me they were scared; I regret not pursuing it further.
Almost two months in a Casual Company before assignment to Vietnam. Utterly unheard of, from what I learned. I was already short. They had it in for me. Got to Nam 2/7/68, my twenty-first birthday. Less than ten months left. Met that first day a good friend from OCS, and someone I also knew from New York. He got me re-assigned as a crypto-clerk. My ambition to defy military protocol and refuse to fight was totally defused. I lived in safety and comfort for another six months, before being shipped home by the Red Cross. Not really a combat vet. Do not have your experiences. Have felt less than since. I commend you, and again thank you for your service.

Egads. The battle did not last 13 days; that was the siege. Eight freaking minutes to total annihilation once the battle began. But the delay by Santa Ana to execute the attack, gave the Texicans a chance to mount a successful campaign.
