What does this time of year mean to you

Fall is upon us now. And with it brings the wonderful time of harvest. Fruits and vegetables,
nuts. Hunting season is also here. Many will load up the old truck and head out into natures wonder land, in search of that big buck, few will get it. Also the time for fishing for that prized steelhead or salmon. Packing away the summer garden tools, racking leaves, and jumping in a pile of them to be sure. Picking that just right pumpkin with the kids. And if some of are very lucky, will be able to go to attend and old fashion fall barn dance. Getting the winter coats out along with Skies and shovels, mittens and scarfs.

Oh this is my favorite time of the year. I remember well as a lad, families heading out and stocking up on wood for the stove or fireplace.

And moms canning, with the heady smells of Apples and peaches, walnuts, Carrots, corn, and peas
and such.

And who could forget Halloween. With us young kids going to our neighbors house and Trick or treating.

I will always be eternally grateful to be born in a time of wonder and great events.

I look back at the many events that I have been blessed to have lived through.

The start and end of WW2, The fall of the Berlin wall, The Korean conflict. .... It dam sure seemed like a war to me. ..... I never saw a television until I was 14. That was a big deal. The internet, cell phones,
Medical break throughs of all kinds. And who could forget, man landing on the moon. with Neal
Armstrong's words " that's one small step for man, one giant leap for man kind." Martin L King.

And the Assassination of John F Kennedy. The attempt on President Reagan's life. The advent of the smart phone The stock market that never stops going up. The first black president.

I am very sure I forgot many more.

I guess this time of year makes me stop and reflect more than any other time.

I have seen many of them. And I parse God, for allowing me the privilege to be born in a time of wonder, good friends, A loving wife and wonderful family.

I do hope you all have a great fall as well.

I remember all that you remember. I also remember the first girl I kissed, my favorite dog, roller coasters at the amusement park, sneaking smokes behind the barn, Christmas cookies, getting new shoes in the spring. I remember when I could run. The first time I tried to make shoes for my horse, ha! Awww, the nights filled with lightning bugs, my first (and only) time I ate lima beans, afraid to stand up in class because I had a boner, running away from the orphanage....and getting caught. Geez, even the bad times now bring a feeling of fondness.

As a farmer fall is my favorite time of the year as I'm now into my harvest of soybeans following up with corn and planting winter wheat .
Harvest is the time I reap the benefit of all my sweat hard work for the entire year not to mention that I only get one maybe 2 and once in a while 3 paychecks a year .

This fall isn't going all that well as there are really good yields and some so so and some lacking not to mention the price we receive is in the tank .

All in all I'm happy to have at least something to harvest as many of my fellow farmers have lost their entire crop due to flooding .

Most Farmers are optimistic and say well next year will be better !

Oh the farmers, the greatest gamblers in the world. who else would put fifty thousand furtlizer in a spray tank, go out and spray it on the field and hope it did not rain too much or it did not rain at all and hope the market was up when it was harvested. my hat is always off for these great people.

The fall, that my wife, myself and our children have in Arizona, like the summers in western Colorado, we had, before we moved to Arizona. Not disputing the weather in Arizona since my wife, bless her heart, loves the heat. I on the other hand do not mind the cool weather of Arizona in the fall, winter and spring.
Like you I grew up in the forties and early fifties. Those were great times to live. First the pager then the advent of the mobile phone before it became smart. The first mobile phone I used in my construction company was like a brick and as heavy. Thank God they were able to reduce the weight of the mobile phone.
I sincerely hope all of you have a great fall and remain healthy and wise.

Of all the farmers I know and have known through out my life time ( 72 yrs ) most consider themselves as eternal optimist and not gamblers we take life as in a step of faith we have faith that when the seed is planted God will supply enough rain and good growing weather to produce a bountiful harvest !

Many times we have been disappointed due to drought , floods , market price below cost of production etc etc and we always say well next year will be better !
Many times we have experienced large crop yields thus making the price go down , however one can make more money with low prices and high yields than the other way around with low yields and high prices .

Farming today requires one to be able to do many things that weren't even thought of back in my younger days.
Technology has made farming life a lot different we have now 60,70,as well as 80 yr old farmers adapting to these new ways and many do not have a college degree !

It takes a certain type of person strong enough and determine enough to survive all the ups and downs and low margins.

So Thank You nailbender for your kind words myself and all other farmers really appreciate it .

Tom
