Why shouldn't immigrants be required to learn english?

I ask because I deal with several immigrants in my work situation. I'm not being a bigot, I'm trying to communicate with these people, and make them understand what needs to be done.
I'm dealing with people from Bosnia, Pakistan, Iran, Cuba, India, and Mexico. How many damn languages should I be required to learn in my own country to get my job done without being a bigot? Honest question!

I had to download a translator app on my phone this morning in order to make the line haul driver from Cuba understand the simple thing that needed to be done this morning. I tried typing it out, and printing it in English because maybe my accent threw him off, but he couldn't read it. He drew me a picture, so I did the app thing out of frustration, and finally got through to him. It is aggravating, at best!

And another thing! How in the HELL does a person get a license to drive an 80,000 lb. vehicle when they can't read, and understand the road signs?
Diversity is great, and all; but how much do we accept?
I want all comers to learn the language that I speak in the country where I live....period!!
If they want to speak their native tongue with people who understand it....GREAT!!

BUT THEY SHOULD LEARN TO COMMUNICATE WITH US. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!!

OK...... (sigh)......rant over.

It's hopeless and getting worse.

Retirement and seclusion is the light at the end of this tunnel.

Until then, I hope we don't get nuked before I get a chance to disappear
from it all.

I'm afraid you're right.

Playing charades just doesn't get it done.
I would be happy to learn other languages if I were going to their country to work.
Apparently, some of them don't feel the same.

I can't agree with you more than I already do. I also work in a situation where a lot of people come in and ask "you speak Spanish?" and when I say no they get angry. I feel like telling them either learn English or go back where you came from. People leave these countries because they are lousy places to live and yet they want to bring that culture here. If you want to live here adapt to the American way of life.

Hang in there Arch.

At least a man can go home at the end of the day and close the door to these frustrations.

I'm stuck working in Houston but at least my co-workers are all relatives and good old boys.

We're gonna do some surf fishing tomorrow but I sure miss being at home with my angel.

That is why I support Trump all the way!! Congress is interested in votes not what is needed. If you don't speak the language, go home you are not welcome. It is required to assimilate into our society. If you don't do that, Muslims included, leave.

You very adequately have shown just one of the problems in their not learning English. There are many more. But as others have voiced, if you go to their country for a job, you learn their language. If they come here, they tried to come to a better place and should try to fit in and learn how things work in America, that made it such a wonderful place to come to for their future. As such, they don't need to bring their failing country with them, but embrace the America they came to, and the first step is to learn to communicate as fluently as possible so they can then integrate into America and become successful.

I have often pointed out the movies Pygmalion and My Fair Lady as examples of what can be done with good, unaccented, fluent speech and the mannerisms and dress of those in higher authority. The world will then open to you based on your own talents and education. But the first thing is SPEECH.

This also goes for our ghetto boys and girls with their pants down past their ass or flamboyant pink hair in skin tight clothes and visible tattoos and piercings all over and speaking the language of the slums and carrying a slovenly attitude of you owe me. I digress.

cheers

I honestly think that a lot of these people use the "language barrier" as a crutch.
The Bosnian that I mentioned in my post is a perfect example.
9 years ago, I trained this man on how to do this job. It was a brutal game of charades with his broken english, and apparent lack of understanding of how things are here. He is still at it, and I know that he knows what's going on, but he claims not to understand sometimes. I know his son, and son in law, who speak very good english, and tell me that he can too.
His English skills are good enough to negotiate the purchase a brand new veehicle every two years, but not good enough to understand why the box he left at point C should have been left at point A. And why, as a contractor, he is required to correct his mistake because he doesn't understand, and can't communicate.

I was a contractor for this company for years, then lost my route. A month later, they begged me to come work for them.
I'm starting over at the bottom of the pile now, but climbing that mountain fast.
I'm one step away from being able to hold these people to the contracts that they have signed. Once there I will write them up for breaches every chance I get until their contracts are terminated, or they do their job. It's a process for me right now.
But the frustration level is high since I have a spoiled rotten terminal manager with no spine who doesn't want to do any work. E mails wear him out! So he says......sorry.....it's just work stuff that pisses me off.

I did text the "manager" earlier, and tell him that I wanted two hours of overtime added to my timecard because of dealing with the emails, and phone calls from home off the clock. He said he would give me four.

This is bullshit. It's a personal problem, and I shouldn't be venting it here.

My apologies.

There is NO reason not to make it a requirement after arriving here. I think it's a stretch to make it an entrance requirement, especially since half of the folks born here struggle to make complete sentences with real words, OMG, WTF? LOL, I mean

It should be the Law that they learn the English Language. in order for them to read our Laws and be understood. If they don't want to learn, then they should ship out and go home to where they came from. When they get their Citizenship English should be lawful. It's all right if they speak their own language, but they must learn the English language as well.

Hell, it keeps people from getting jobs. I was told, twice, that I wasn't hired because I wasn't bi lingual. Half of the Government workforce must know or learn Mexican to keep their jobs - but there are few rules going the other direction.

Mexico never stopped the Mexican-American war, they just changed tactics.............and they're winning. Kids can wear stinkymayo T shirts, but not American flags......which sounds like surrender to me.

It doesn't seem all that complicated to me. We are a melting pot of multi national, ethnic and cultural people.........who should be expected to assimilate with those born here, not the other way around. I've always said, if you don't like American traditions or language - go the f&ck back where you came from. That's seems simple, don't it?
