All beliefs are a lot like computer viruses for the mind. They distort, slow, and often disrupt the clear functioning of thought. A total breakdown is possible. Look at suicide-bombers! And yet most naively think or feel that these glitches in our brain are not just normal and acceptable but should somehow be given a place or prominence and respect. Why? Are beliefs necessary?
Rarely do we act on our beliefs. We act, and let our beliefs sanction those actions. Mostly blind predisposition and presumption. Beliefs should be treated as an intolerable bias for or insufferable prejudice against something. They have no basis in Reason or Logic. They are a corruption of clear thinking. They too often make us miss what is best.
I do not need to believe in God to act godly. Common sense as a human guides me. If I believe in God, that is for me alone and does not enter into any judgments about others or how to act. Integrity is the sole response. Seeing that we are all interconnected and dependent on each other in an orderly and decent way is enough.
To say "Jesus Christ is my lord and savior" changes nothing. All that Christ stood for was not what we believed about him or said about him but what we did to care "for the least of these." That was his entire message. Believing in the "love of neighbor" and actually loving our neighbor are worlds apart. Beliefs are both an unnecessary burden on ourselves and the world.
