SSI and VA are earned you pay into SSI all your working life. You paid for your VA with your service and your body.

I also was a Foster parent, and worked at the Childrens Shelter, for abused, neglected kids. You wouldn't believe all the FREE services these people get: counseling, housing, food, clothing, medical, you name it! And Foster care paid me right at $1.00 per hour!

Sorry to be frank and in step with reality. I wanna help folks that are hungry, but all i see EVER are mega-obese welfare queens using food stamps and getting assistance, they dont seem too hungry to me, also poor is a misnomer here in the states. Most on assistance have televisions in every room, newer cars, Iphones, hair dos and nails. How poor can you be with all this shit? I dont have TVs in every room or an Iphone and I drive old cars, Never got a dime from the govt. The govt is terrible at deciding who needs help. Its pathetic, yet I am amused by it. Id kill myself if I couldnt provide a way for myself in this great country. If you cant make it here, you cant make it anywhere. Its hilarious

I am sure there are cases of abuse of our public assistance, but I haven't seen all the fat poor people or all of the free stuff they get. I think I am more concerned with those poor who don't have the basic necessities that I am with the people who are getting something they don't deserve. There are some free riders who should experience some consequences for abusing the system and we should be very respectful of those who are in need.
I have to admit that I haven't been looking for or judging those who receive public assistance.
I support very severe consequences for those who abuse it.
