Matthew chapter 14

Verse 1 & 2

Herod did not want to kill John the Baptist. He felt guilty for having it done.

Verse 3 - 12

John came in the spirit of Elijah. His name was not Elijah, so he was not recognized. Today we want to see supernatural miracles but don’t want to do what God says. We are not taught that if we want anything from God we should do something for God. Large churches sell water and towels. They won’t help you if you buy them or hurt you if you don’t. What you wear when you pray doesn’t matter. God is not looking for your money, He is looking for you.

Verse 13 & 14

Jesus and John were cousins and Jesus was emotionally saddened when John was killed. In spite of His personal feelings, He still had compassion on the multitude.

Verse 15 - 21

This is the only miracle that is in all four gospels, so it must be the most important. There is another feeding mentioned in Matthew and Mark. In all the multitude is hungry but only a small boy has brought a lunch. Jesus has the multitude sit down, breaks the bread and fish and gives to His disciples, and the disciples fed the multitude. You can put no limit on the Holy Spirit, but God is trying to teach something.

Verse 22 & 23

John is still dead and Jesus is still sad. We all need time alone with God.

Verse 24 - 26

This was around 3:00 in the morning. There was a saying that before a boat sank, the sailors saw a ghost walking on the water. I think this is Jesus playing a joke. This shows that He is no longer sad about John’s death.

Verse 27 - 30

This account is only here. As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he was able to walk on water.

Verse 31 - 33

When Peter started looking at his surroundings, he started to sink. If you want to be a disciple, forget about being comfortable.

Verse 34 - 36

Jesus actually improved the lives of His listeners.
