On this day in 432 AD, Saint Patrick, aged about 16, was captured by Irish pirates from his home in Great Britain and taken as a slave to Ireland (traditional date). As a fifth-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland, he was known as the "Apostle of Ireland", and is the primary patron saint of Ireland, along with saints Brigit of Kildare and Columba. He is also venerated in the Anglican Communion, the Old Catholic Church and in the Eastern Orthodox Church as equal-to-apostles and the Enlightener of Ireland. Many people across the world will celebrate his memory by getting drunk and making fools of themselves.

Happy Birthday!

Dred Scott (1777 - 1858)

Nat King Cole (1919 - 1965)
A heavy smoker, Cole was just 45 when he died of lung cancer. He would have been 98 today.

Thanks for the history lessson. I've oftrn been curious about the story of Saint Patricks Day. Someone told me that Saint Patrick cast the snakes out of Ireland. You're explanation sounds more likely.

Speaking of which, you know what an Irishman call a seven course meal? A six-pack of Guinness and a baked potato.

The difference between an Irish wedding and an Irish funeral?

One less drunk.

The difference between high Irish and low Irish is high Irish will push the dishes to one side before pissing in the sink.

Happy St. Patties Day from an Irish, Scott, German.
My Grandpa and Grandma's families both immigrated here from Ireland in the early 1800's. My Grandma's last wish was to see Ireland. She came back with all kinds of stuff about our last name. Apparently, the McMullen name had something to do with royalty back in the day. I've never looked into it, but it is pretty cool.

There never were any snakes in Ireland. Same with England, Scotland and Wales. Fact is, the entire British Isles are fairly devoid of reptiles in general. I never bothered trying to figure out why.
