Today in 1898, the US Battleship Maine exploded in Havana Harbor. Although the evidence was slim, a US Navy Board of Inquiry ruled the explosion as sabotage, and Spain was blamed. There were already tensions between the US and Spain, and this occurrence basically precipitated the Spanish-American War.

Also on this day in 1965, Canada officially adopted the Maple Leaf flag.
