There are a lot of Marines who post here. This one is for you. Today in 1943, Guadalcanal was officially secured after the remaining Japanese forces evacuated. The first major land victory of many the Marines tallied against the Imperial Japanese Army.

Sorry I'm late here, Loki. The Battle for Guadalcanal was the Marine's first major island campaign in the Pacific. As a result, it was my Dad's first combat experience. He received his first Purple Heart there, and if my memory serves me correctly, later ones on Saipan (or Tinian) and Tarawa. I appreciate your post bringing up thoughts and memories of my Dad. I have been somewhat down with a severe cold this past several days.
BTW, vocabulary visigoth, I often capitalize words/places that carry a certain weight in my heart and mind. Please forgive those errors.

One of my uncles was at Saipan. One at Anzio, and one at Normandy. (Utah Beach, not the mess at Omaha.) My father was older and stayed stateside as he had re-enlisted for the war.
