Welcome, Bob. Thanks for your service. I'm a 6 yr reservist, long since retired. I'd love to be in right now but I don't think they take 78 yr olds.

Welcome to OPP. You'll find lots of veterans here, some disabled. but all of us vets. All kinds here, right wing, left wing, and just plain old wing nuts. Have a good time. Tempers can flare on this site, so be ready.

Hello Bob and all the rest of you. I had seven years in, and spent some time on the old Bonnie Dick (CV-31) (Bon Homme Richard) commissioned in 1944, and still around to pick up Mercury Astronauts. Scrapped in 1992. One Battle Star for WWII and 5 for the Korean and Vietnam Wars. She was an Old Essex Class carrier and served her country well. I was pleased to serve with her as a Photographers Mate and the men on her, as well as with all the rest of you Vets, Bob included. Oh, I'm only 79.

You sound like you aren't a day over.....78. lol. I seem to be one of the few vets here who only served one hitch. Most of you guys were in for 2 or 3 or more. Maybe if I'd been Navy or Air Force I might have reconsidered.

Hi Bob,

I'm the widow of a vet. My husband passed five years ago. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Hazelwood (and so, my avatar) during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Don't worry about writing - we're none of us literary scholars. We are just happy to have found OPP as a venue to vent. My husband's name was also Bob, so that fact, and the fact that you are a vet, means we will probably agree a good deal of time. I hope that your disability doesn't cause you too much pain. God Bless You and Welcome Bob.

Welcome aboard Bob. This site can be very entertaining at times and there are a number of vets here to share with you their views and others that try to shove their agenda upon you. I am a vet also and only 80 years old. Hope you have a good time here.

Back to Loki. I was 17 when I entered by way of Naval Reserves (USNR) with my parents signature. That's how I got stuck for 7 years. The greater part was Ready and Standby Reserves. Anyhow, the food was ok. We were between wars at the time-post Korean, pre-Vietnam. But, I did spend three months of the coast of The Med when Eisenhower sent the Marines into Lebanon. I have always wondered why the MM is not considered a branch of the services. During WWII, I know many ships were armed. Maybe they will finally get around to it like they did with the Coast Guard. Better late than never.

Hi guys and gals. I'm new here also and having a hard time navigating the thread, that's why I'm posting here. I've been reading your posts for a couple of months and enjoy most of what I read. For the most part it is very informational.

I am 66 years young, was in the MM in 68 bringing you guys what you needed to keep the VC off your backs. Thanks for you SERVICE!

I live in Chesapeake, (Tidewater), Va. with my wife Gail of 38 yrs. I'm a tad right of LOKI but tend to keep it to my self unless an education is in order.

I belong to a unisex hunt club where the Women (we guys out numbered them 8 to one) seem to rule??? Most of us guys like it that way. My Mom was a Feminist before it was a word and I guess I am too. She was (Navy guys will know this) FLEET STAFF during WW11.
She put up with no stuff and I won't either with someone giving any female stuff either, right or wrong, don't hit a woman if I'm around

Hey guys, like I said, I've been reading ya'll for a while and think I really like what I've experienced but please help me to respond. As I said, I've not been able to figure out how to do this site.

Thanks,

Mike

Welcome, Mike. One thing, make sure you use the "quote reply" option when you reply to someone, so your post will be directed properly. Most newcomers make this mistake, me included. I suppose you have seen that tempers flare sometimes. Just jump right on in when you feel like it. Admin is good about answering your questions about tech stuff, but you'd be better off many times just to ask us. Sometimes Admin takes a day or so to get back to you.
