In 1835, The United States national debt was 0 for the first and only time:

"On Jan. 8, 1835, all the big political names in Washington gathered to celebrate what President Andrew Jackson had just accomplished. A senator rose to make the big announcement: 'Gentlemen ... the national debt ... is PAID.' That was the one time in U.S. history when the country was debt free. It lasted exactly one year."

'Gentlemen ... the national debt ... is PAID.' Imagine hearing that from a Senator today? Would anyone even notice? Back then, it was a big deal.

"You are a den of vipers and thieves. I intend to rout you out, and by the grace of the Eternal God, will rout you out." - Andrew Jackson. He meant it too.
