What do you think the reaction of US citizens will be if social security is cut in half or eliminated?

Richard-where do you get these wild ideas? SS will not change at all for current recipients. Something has to be done to preserve it for those who are not yet retired. Options are: Eliminate the payroll deduction cap, raise the retirement age a couple of years and means test. A combination of all three will preserve SS for decades to come. Failure to act will cause it to go broke. it has to be addressed soon as deferring action makes it more difficult to remedy. Merely eliminating the cap and means testing will make SS solvent for years. Good Luck America !!!

Get the house and senate on social security and no pensions and you will see the social security program strengthened and increased in funding and the yearly increase will amaze you no doubt. Especially if you remove all previous pensions for congress and force them onto social security as well.

What makes you certain it will not change for current recipients? I bet that even if only the first of your suggestions was done that would go a long way towards solving the problem?

Why does the DOD never run out of money?

Better support in Congress? Let's put it to a vote!

Good Luck America!! You are going to need it.

Let's see. Since seniors vote, and vote in high percentages, politicians are going to cut in half or eliminate the seniors paycheck. We know politicians aren't interested in getting re-elected. You need to quit taking psychedelics. If you're not you should start.

Richard-yes it would but since the high income earners would be paying much more into the system they would also get much more out of the system unless it is "means" tested. That would limit the amount they can collect regardless of how much they put in. There obviously would be complaints but that is the cost of being afforded the opportunity to earn high incomes. Good Luck America !!!

bahmer-that is not likely to happen but it should. The only way this gets done is if all government pensions, except for the military, are discontinued and everyone is put on SS. What are the odds of congress passing such legislation ? Maybe if Trump shamed them into so doing ?? Good Luck America !!!

Then I guess we need to disregard what Trump and his Cabinet appointees caim they are going to do, because we all know he and his group lie every time their lips move. Yes, I know what you have stated about who votes, etc., but I just thought I would get your opinions.

Richard-since the title of your thread is "Speculations" you are indeed speculating about what Trump's cabinet will do one month before they take over. Would it not be wise to wait six months or so to determine which direction they might take ? Are you fearful that they will or will not implement Trump's agenda? Have any of the so called lies that to attribute to Trump and his cabinet picks hurt the country in any way ? How about the Obama and Hillary lies ? We know that those have harmed America don't we ? Relax and enjoy the ride as the days of business as usual are over. Good Luck America !!!

Carol, that isn't the issue here. Trump has been called a pathological liar by some of the most respected (though not by you) pubications in the country,. including the Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker Magazine. We are not taking about Obama and the Clintons. We are talking about Trump. Please stop trying to change the subject.
