Today in 1620, the half million ton sailing vessel Mayflower docked at what is now Plymouth, MA. Why do I say it displaced 500,000 tons? That is the minimum size required to haul every Yankee's ancestors who supposedly came over on it.
With typical English pluck, they figured arriving in New England in the middle of winter with little food was a good thing.

Neither were they. Arriving in the middle of a New England winter with little food and no shelter does not make you the sharpest knife in the drawer.
