Why Israel took 40 years to cross the desert

It did not take 40 years to travel from Canaan to Egypt. Why did Israel take 40 years to go back to Canaan? Read Numbers chapter 14. In it the children of Jacob refuse to enter Canaan because there are giants there. In Numbers 14:22 God counts ten times He is tested. The complaints and misdeeds of Israel are many. Before Moses can get back from receiving the Ten Commandments from God, the children of Jacob have made an idol and gave it credit for what God did. Instead of digging a well, they complain when there is no water. God rains food out of the sky every day. The people complain at least twice about eating the same thing every day. They accuse God of bringing them out to the desert to kill them, after God did 10 miracles to free them from the Egyptians and even parted water and drowned the Egyptian army. God was keeping them alive in the desert. They don’t appreciate anything God did for them. The final straw is the refusal to go into Canaan. Only two men, Caleb and Joshua, want to claim the land. Initially God gets so frustrated that He wants to kill them all and start over with Moses. Moses talks God out of this, so God decrees that everyone except Caleb and Joshua above the age of 20 shall die in the desert, and Israel shall wander the desert until the next generation grows up and that generation dies. This takes around 40 years. Satan can make thoughts come into your mind. Just like God but God appeals to intellect, while satan appeals to emotion. Think before you speak or act. Because once you say something, you can’t unsay it; and once you do something, it can’t be undone. In most situations, nothing is a good thing to do and say.
