Brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People do not decline mentally with age. It just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information stored in their brain, scientists believe. Much like a computer struggles as the hard-drive becomes more full, so humans also take longer to access information, it has been suggested.

Researchers say this slowing down is not the same as cognitive decline. The human brain works slower in old age, said Dr. Micheal Ramscar of Tubingen University in Germany, but only because we have stored more information over time. The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more, but just may not be able to access the information.

Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand wondering what they came for. It is NOT a memory problem, it is nature's way of making older people do more exercise!

SO, THERE!

Each of us oldies and goodies needs to hang this wonderful assessment over the heads of our beds. In case we cannot access the information that led us to this conclusion in the first place.

I have a companion quote you may like:
"At age 20, we worry about what others think of us. At age 40, we don't care what they think of us. At age 60, we discover they haven't been thinking of us at all." Ann Landers (1918-2002)

I vaguely recall hearing a quote of that nature, but didn't remember to whom it was attributed. Now, I know, and I love it!

Now that's just GREAT! Myself being an 'old person' I must agree 100%, esp on two major points and that being ( let me see now I almost forgot) Oh yes the short memory thing. I noticed that of late I have to write things down and need GPS to find the bathroom. And the second point is that I have a fantastic memory for the past, even down to the last detail, for which as things go today I am most great full to recall the past. However I still keep wondering what ever happened to moms old Buick..that's all folks..

If all the old people were to die today, there'd be, well, fewer old people. The good news is, the youngsters will be old in 20 years, or so. Without us around, they'll have to figure out how to do it on their own.

Ah yes the GPS. My wife is starting to hide it, esp. when I get that itchi twichi feeling. Also I don't measure my life in years any more. I now measure it in quarters as 25 years per quarter. This way I have a little more to look forward to once I hit the fourth quarter.
