Joint Statement of President Donald J. Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea at the Singapore Summit

President Donald J. Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a first, historic summit in Singapore on June 12, 2018.

President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and sincere exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new U.S.-DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK, and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Convinced that the establishment of new U.S.-DPRK relations will contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula and of the world, and recognizing that mutual confidence building can promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un state the following:

1. The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new U.S.-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
2. The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
4. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

Having acknowledged that the U.S.-DPRK summit — the first in history — was an epochal event of great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and for the opening up of a new future, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un commit to implement the stipulations in this joint statement fully and expeditiously. The United States and the DPRK commit to hold follow-up negotiations, led by the U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and a relevant high-level DPRK official, at the earliest possible date, to implement the outcomes of the U.S.-DPRK summit.

President Donald J. Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have committed to cooperate for the development of new U.S.-DPRK relations and for the promotion of peace, prosperity, and security of the Korean Peninsula and of the world.

So... that's it?
Yep.

So aside from the abundant self-promotion ("...held a first, historic summit", "...an epochal event of great significance") there are only four actual commitments...

These are just vague promises. Campaign trail stuff... Where are the teeth? At least Obama got Iran to actually agree to a weapons inspection program, which Trump's own administration was forced to admit was actually working (while at the same time calling it a bad deal). So did Kim agree to weapons inspections? No? He didn't? Then what do these four promises actually buy us? Did he even promise to destroy his nuclear program? No? He didn't?

This is laughable. The "great summit" produced nothing more than Obama was able to accomplish with a simple phone call at the start of his negotiations with Iran. It wasn't even a summit... "Summit" is a reference to the top of a mountain that you can't reach without climbing to get there. In the political world, that concept is applied to meetings that can't be reached without a political climb, usually consisting of months or even years of planning and negotiating. The "promises" to work toward a solution is what happens at the start of the climb not at the summit. The agreement even says that negotiations will follow... so, it's not a summit...

When the leaders involved in a "summit" say they are going in with clean slates to negotiate their own deal... It's not a summit. When the journalists and commentators are all waiting outside the room guessing what the meeting will even be about - it's NOT a summit! Trump, being as narcissistic and as close to illiterate as any president has ever been, probably thinks it's a summit because it's between two top dogs. But if this was a real summit, resting on a mountain of serious negotiations and planning, it would have featured details about reports, inspections and certainly more specifics on what these vague promises actually mean.

I think what's going on here, is neither Trump nor Kim are willing to compromise so instead of putting the summit at the end of the negotiating process, they put it at the start so they get the chance to bask in the glory of a fake summit and hopefully make the history books BEFORE negotiations fall apart. So, thank's for the show Trump... but I'm not impressed by two fat dotards who think they can scare the world by volleying childish tweets at each other then make people think they are saving it by kissing and making up in front of a staged release of doves.

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". Neither Trump nor Kim can produce miracles. Apparently in your eyes, only Obama can do that but for reasons unknown to us mere mortals he chose not to so I guess we'll just have to plod along with the the two we have to work with. It's a start in a long process and I have no doubt that Democrats will be busy digging potholes every step along the way.

It WAS historic...............no US President has ever wasted as much time for so little.

After much talk by lower ranking officials from both sides, the two leaders met...................and agreed to keep talking. This was after trading love notes with each other for a few weeks.

This was a PR coup for N. Korea................................they forced the President of the United States to meet the Supreme Leader in person.

You're missing the point. It's all very well saying you have to start somewhere but don't call the start of negotiations a summit... a summit is the ceremonious signing of agreements that come at the END of negotiations.

And what kind of "start" is this anyway? Kim didn't offer ANYTHING that North Korea hasn't already promised previous presidents repeatedly for years (without needing all the pomp). His father promised Clinton they would work toward "denuclearization" back in the 90's. So this so-called summit is basically putting us on the exact same "start" that we have already been on for 50 years. Trump, the master of deal making got NOTHING!

I'm just wondering how much money the tax payers wasted on this idiot dog and pony show.

LOL, That's what I was thinking... I was tuned into the live coverage and couldn't help but laugh at all the media attention. You could see camera crews tripping over themselves to take pictures while commentators took turns guessing at what the meeting would be about. "Maybe they will agree to agree on something." You can't write better comedy.

I'm sure they will see that way, especially after every previous president since the cease fire refused to meet with the North Korean dictators. I guess that's the difference between presidents doing their job and Trump who is more interested in getting a Nobel Peace Prize.
