Today, a little while ago, our mail lady knocked on the door with our mail, and a package for us. She has never done that before, since we're rural. She wanted to know where the black dog that had barked at her every day for the past 10 years was. I teared up, and told her that we had him put down a week ago yesterday. She teared up, and we exchanged hugs. She told me that Gus had been there for her for the entire time that she has delivered our mail, and missed him.She always left our packages by the gate because he was such a great defender of our property, and she just didn't know about him.
I showed her where he is buried, and she told me that she wanted to bring us a plant to put on his grave, if we didn't mind. What could I say?
We aren't the only ones who miss the four leggers. People who see them every day in the course of their work do too!
I thought I was past the worst of having to let Gus go after 14 years of being my sidekick, but I guess I'm not. Damn dog!
On a lighter note, I have a different attitude about that hag that keeps putting bills in my mailbox.

Dogs are family and every one we have lost leaves a hole in our hearts. The toughest ones are those where we had to decide that now was the time to let them go, to force them to linger in pain would have been cruelty beyond belief.

I told my wife the other day that if we want to have a pet that will outlive us, we need to get a parrot, or a turtle. And turtles suck at playing fetch. So we're stuck with dogs.

A turtle would prove to be a shell of the companion a dog makes.
LadyBug herself said so.

I was in line at a conviniance store. The cashier was attending an older lady in her 70's. There was a woman in line behind her and in front of me. The older lady asked for help, she had bought a 40 lbs bag of dog food and needed someone to carry it to her car. The cashier said that she would need to wait because they were short handed. Then the other woman said" that's why you all(elderly people)shouldn't have those damn animals. I told the First Lady don't worry mam, I'll help you, then I told the rude woman"it's people like you that makes us love dogs more then people.
Exactly. I help my 80 year old neighbor with his hay for his horse .
I have a couple as well. When my wife was sick and dying from cancer my next door neighbor mowed my yard every time he mowed his for that entire summer. Just yesterday he had his yard sprayed for dandelions and he asked if it would be OK to have the guy spray a section of my yard as well. Probably didn't want all of my dandelions blowing into his yard. Anyway when the guy came to do his yard they talked and they had some background together and the guy sprayed my entire yard for free. Since I have emphysema it sure helps when others help you out that is for sure.

I have been helped out myself, as well as helped others. That's just what you do.
Several years ago, there was this Blue Heeler dog that chased my car when I was going to work every morning for the longest time. It got to be kind of a game with me because I always knew where he would be, and what to expect out of him. He was a car chasing fool! Then one morning, I drove up on his body in the middle of the road. I didn't know where he lived since houses are scattered out here, so I just carried him to the edge where he wouldn't get run over anymore, and set him down. When I came home that evening, he was gone. I've always missed our morning game, and feel for his owners while being mad at them at the same time for allowing him to be out chasing cars.
Coming of age in the 50's it was common for everyone to help everyone else in the neighborhood. As a kid, every adult was our 'parent' and made sure we behaved. Local merchants issued credit to those in need and you paid what you could when you could. And some call what we see today as 'progress'.

How do you know Arch's wifes hair color?
Unless you talking about your own problems then I can see it.
