‘I Can Only Imagine’ film -- It’s time for anti-Christian bigots to stop mocking and start listening

By Lauren DeBellis Appell | Fox News

'I Can Only Imagine' stars on faith, forgiveness

Dennis Quaid and Trace Adkins on new movie inspired by Christian rock band MercyMe's hugely successful single.

The independent Christian movie “I Can Only Imagine” performed far better than anyone could have imagined at the box office last weekend, bringing in $17.1 million when it was only expected to sell between $2 million and $4 million in tickets.

Why? Because people of faith in this country are speaking loudly. The elitists on the left who continue to ridicule Christianity while they preach at us to coexist need to stop talking and start listening.

While it cost only $7 million to make, “I Can Only Imagine” finished opening weekend at the No. 3 spot in the box office.

“I don’t think the industry predicted this,” said Jon Erwin, co-director of the movie. “They really dismissed the film prior to opening weekend – almost called it a failure before we even got a chance to open it. The opening weekend success of ‘I Can Only Imagine’ illustrates just how large the Christian audience is, and the movie industry should pay attention.”

We continue to see this growing hatred for Christians in spite of the fact that they make up the majority of our society. We’ve just seen two more recent examples of this.

First, comedian Jim Carrey tweeted his distorted painting apparently portraying White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders with the message: “This is the portrait of a so-called Christian whose only purpose in life is to lie for the wicked. Monstrous!”

Then HBO comedian John Oliver stooped low, using Vice President Mike Pence’s daughter and her apolitical children’s book about the family's pet bunny to target the vice president.

Charlotte Pence wrote “Marlon Bundo’s A Day in the Life of the Vice President,” an educational children’s story about the role of the vice president, told from the point-of-view of her family’s bunny, Marlon Bundo. Oliver released a parody book about the family’s bunny in which he took aim at the vice president because he disagrees with his views on gay marriage.

Once upon a time kids of politicians were off limits. Now the anti-Christian crowd has gone so far off the rails they justify using kids as well as their pets as a bullying platform to spew their personal hatred for Christianity. Apparently, anything is fair game if you’re attacking a person of faith.

Oliver’s fans also took to Amazon to troll Charlotte Pence’s book, attack the vice president and praise John Oliver.

These two are just the latest in a growing pattern of incidents where Christians have been singled out and mocked and ridiculed. They follow “The View” co-host Joy Behar’s comments that Christians who hear from God have a mental illness. The backlash was so fierce that Behar has since been forced to apologize.

Also in recent weeks, former Arkansas Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee was forced to resign from the Country Music Association Board amid backlash for his conservative and religious beliefs.

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle ridiculed Larry Kudlow’s faith last week when he said, on leaving CNBC to accept President Trump’s offer to become director of National Economic Council: “However things work out, it will be God’s will.” Ruhle later apologized for being dismissive.

Christians are growing tired of this increasing trend that makes their faith the punchline of jokes and the target of public taunting by the far left, who view themselves as morally superior simply because they have a microphone.

“I Can Only Imagine” is a hopeful, uplifting story of love and redemption. What makes it so powerful is that it’s a true story.

Bart Millard had the deck stacked against him. His mom left when he was young and he was forced to live with his abusive father. But after his dad was diagnosed with cancer, Millard witnessed firsthand how the once abusive father is transformed into a believer in Jesus Christ.

Inspired by the miracle God worked on his dad, Bart Millard went on to write the song “I Can Only Imagine,” which became the bestselling Christian single of all time and launched his group Mercy Me.

The story is evidence of grace that sustains us and gives us every reason to have hope for a future, no matter how bad our circumstances.

As Christians, we can only imagine a time when anti-Christian bigots can finally understand that while they may be louder, we make up a not-so-silent, large portion of society in this country. We buy movie tickets, concert tickets, watch TV and vote.

If you observe the hatred you hear directed at Christians, in just about every instance it’s been responded to by taking the high road with dignity and class. That’s because as Christians we don’t look to Hollywood, or its high-profile counterparts for validation. They are not our hope for the future. If they truly want to coexist, they need to start listening and stop ridiculing.

I can only imagine what would happen if those who hate Christians could trade their hate for the hope this movie inspires, instead of continuing to perpetuate a hostile culture that assaults people of faith in this country. If they would start listening and stop mocking, then we could all start coexisting.

I can only imagine.

Mocking ridiculous ideas is fun, honest and easier than full scale war with rationing and casualties and bullets and bombs.

The rest is just politics and culture regarding how best and most effectively to deploy our weapons.

Perhaps Christians could stop providing the bait?

If you don't want to be ridiculed, don't be ridiculous?

Anti Christian bigots? The mistake being made is that you people assume you are Christians when nothing in your heart displays any sense of Christianity at all. We have mothers and children purposely separated at our borders and you people dance up and down for the occurrence. What of the golden rule or treating them as fellow Christians in a predicament? But you can't even do that, instead, you are pissed off because a judge forced you to behave as civil Christian human beings. No you don't want Guatemalans, even though they are Christians, no you want Aryans from as far north as you can get it. Do you think they will play Jingle Bells for you or some such???

Good to have you back PeterS! See, we learn this weekend that if a christian bigot like mwdegutis calls you an arrogant f**k, THEN says a generic 'sorry' to the ether and muses aloud whether something he said might have offended me, but then remarks in answer to himself that it was my own fault and I have collateral responsibility for failing to control his thoughts and speech for him, he is forgiven by his God, then God tells him its fine and I can be left bleeding in the sand as far as Christian charity is concerned.

Without the ability to admit and properly handle simple ethical\moral housekeeping chores like apologizing properly for inadvertant and especially intentional insults, in such a manner as to restore amity and equilibrium, what else of value does Christianity offer the world?

I know they get to go live in a celestial Disneyland after the rest of us are exterminated, but is that truly a good thing for humanity in general?

I will continue to oppose christian bigots wherever they slither!

Again.

Perhaps Christians could stop providing the bait?

Tex. Sorry to butt in but I lost the thread where you said my grammar so bad that you couldn't understand a word I said. I have been hoping for your corrections as I honestly haven't been able to sleep because of the terror that what I write is an illogical embarrassment. Please, send me the corrections in a PM if nothing else. I can't tell you how horrible it is being up all night going over old grammar books scratching my head at what I am doing wrong. "Did I misuse a semi-colon?" "Did spell check not catch a misspelled word?" "Did I use -- or ... in a manner that was confusing?" Hell, did I just say manner instead of manor? Do you see the horror I'm going through Tex? I mean, you are apparently a grammatical expert and I am incapable of passing your critical eye. Please, give me your corrections so that I can once again live my life in the blissful grammatical peace that I once knew...

I have to ask: what cry for attention was that? "If you don't want to be ridiculed, don't be ridiculous." I think that more a statement than a question but that is the only error that I can see. What she said was a perfectly reasonable statement on how you Christian Conservative's like to behave5. You say something that is absurd and then any resulting criticism is an attack on your Christianity instead of note on your ignorance. Here is a call for " anti-Christian bigots to stop mocking and start listening" but did you read the nonsense in the thesis statement? "Faith speaks loudly" 'While it cost only 7 million to make it brought in 17.2 million in only one day! WOW and WHOOPEE!'

So in reading the title of this thread are we atheists suppose to kneel down because you just offered an anecdotal proof in the rest of your statement? Gosh Christians flocked to see a Christian movie--you atheists better hop on while you have a chance! That's about as absurd a use of reason as I have ever experienced. There is no growing hatred of Christians only animosity at the ignorance you Conservative Christians (CC's for short) continue to display. This is not the first Christian movie to be a big hit. Hell, if I remember correctly the movie about the little boy who died on the operating table and went to heaven was a big hit too. Of course he made it all up but it was still a good story--one that even I watched and shed a tear in doing so.

And I apologize about the words and actions of some of my fellow liberals. Personally I feel sorry for Sarah Sanders (I have a daughter who is no looker) and have never made fun of her. And I didn't hear the remarks made by others but I am kind of scratching my head over how they connect to the movie. I mean, I have been going over grammar books and the thesis statement of an article or paper should connect to the entire article--not just the opening remarks. In fact, it [the thesis statement] is suppose to be a guide in how you write the full article. So you being the grammatical giant that you are can you please explain the topic shift from the wonderful success of a Christian made and funded movie to how we mean ole liberals like to pick on you CC's because, well, we liberals are just mean an nasty? And I am using CC's here because you've done nothing to establish that any real Christians made and financed the movie or took part in anyway in this article...

And listen to this form the article: The story is evidence of grace that sustains us and gives us every reason to have hope for a future, no matter how bad our circumstances. This is in reference to the success of a song for Christ sake! Now this is what actually happened: because you Christians listened to a song for a record number of times--for a Christian song--you somehow read that as an affirmation for your life no matter your circumstances in the future? Talk about a self fulfilling prophecy--that's it right there. You can change the title from 'I'm Ok, Your Ok' to 'I'm okay, I'm okay' simply because you said it over and over.

And I am not trying to pick on any Christians here but this article is absurd. The success of movies and songs simply means that you Christians went to movies and listened to songs for a record number of time. There is nothing else to be read into it. Certainly there is no true atheist who is suddenly going to drop the shield of reason and pick up one based on irrational logic you displayed here.

And one last thing--read the posts written by your fellow CC's on this board. There is not a single one of you who takes the high road--you discriminate freely, you are arrogant in your mistreatment of others, and you people are simply some of the nastiest creatures ever created by your imaginary god--where you've shown you are more in love with your AR-15 then the god of your imagination...

These two are just the latest in a growing pattern of incidents where Christians have been singled out and mocked and ridiculed. . . .
br . . . . We continue to see this growing hat... (show quote)

The presentation and analysis of reactions to "these two" and the "growing pattern of incidents" invite further criticism of the tendency of Christian believers to enjoy the "pseudo-sanctification effect," of persecution.

The loss of indulgent privilege is not persecution, it is a disciplined correction, to be effected by society and the privileged group working in concert. When the target of correction, the CC's in this instance, are recalcitrant, refuse correction and display an unwillingness to suffer the social discipline, because they see themselves as not answerable to any authority but "God," do they not position themselves as at odds with societal and governmental authority??

When the numbers of non religious citizens was neglible enough, their contribution of ideas and directions and authority to mainstream thought was neglible or easily drowned out. Privileged groups enjoyed and grew protective of the power and prestige their sheer numbers allowed. When shifting trends created shifting needs and focus, the entitled group could become recalcitrant in accepting loss of illegitimate privilege, there can be a spectrum of reactions.

1. Education, dialog and self reflection correcting the self delusion and spurring appropriate action and emotional containment=>COOPERATION

2. Stubborn recalitrance to the point that, on one side or other, their feelings are hurt and they pout=>STALEMATE

3. Or when numbers and perceived power might shift they can wait until they feel confident of the direction of the shift and:

-Watch for chances to regain the old status quo if opposition wanes or

-Become traitors to their former affiliates and declare independence from the original group and continue to resist, foment revolt and separation or even annhilalation of the other=>WARFARE

Unless their God allows them to move to warfare and annihilate those who oppose them, the CC's deepest aspiration=celestial invasion and disposal of opposition via return of Christ and final judgement, will remain a treasured hope.

As long as they treasure hope of future miraculous celestial victory, they can just lay down by the waters of Babylon and weep for their Zion. There is little to promote the first option and insufficient motive to kindle the second.

We will thus ALL remain stuck with option 2 until we reach a balancing point and the balance tips toward consilience or mutual annihilation.

Jesus said, “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you." John 15:18-19

Jesus said (praying to his Father), "But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth. I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me." John 17:13-21

For you and Pete Singularity...

Jesus said,
"You will keep on hearing, but will not understand;
You will keep on seeing, but will not perceive;
For the heart of this people has become dull,
With their ears they scarcely hear,
And they have closed their eyes,
Otherwise they would see with their eyes,
Hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart and return,
And I would heal them."
Matthew 13: 14b-15

TL;DR

Don't need you to quote this to me, AGAIN, I have had the New Testament memorized since I was 12 years old.

Maybe some sandal dusting? Your God told you, not me! Just saying".
