What Should We Do?
Tony L Bell MA

Because we all experience frustration and great sorrow attributed to senseless massacres occurring in our society, we must take an unemotional and realistic look at the decisions, conditions, and reactions that have brought us to this unwelcome reality.

Could it be that our societal infatuation with violence as depicted in Motion Pictures, General TV programming, News Reporting, video games, sports, etc., has an adverse effect on society, one that we do not want? We are bombarded with advertising continually. It invades nearly every aspect of our lives and what is the result, we buy. Cannot the same be true of the violence that is continually invading our consciousness?

Would not a good counter measure be the education of our youth at their very beginning to understand what violence is, why it manifests, and how to counter it? Would a top down full review of and corrections to our fundamentally flawed educational systems work to curb the societal flaw that is in question here? A long-term solution, yes but solutions need to start somewhere.

Social reaction to atrocities has been conditioned to be emotional. As stated earlier great sorrow and frustration is our knee jerk reaction. Sadly this does nothing to curb the atrocities and only serves to intensify anger. Maybe a more fruitful reaction would be to use these events as teaching moments.

Speaking of teaching moments, a lot of what we are experiencing can be traced back to decisions that were made that took the ability of effective discipline out of the hands of parents and allowed children to threaten, and even prosecute, parents who dared.

So what should we as a society do? Start at the beginning. Teach our children and give them the tools necessary to understand and deal with issues that cause anger. Rethink the violent media that permeates our consciousness daily. Restructure our education system to foster the results we desire in our society. Maybe even return to Biblically sound values. Proverbs 22:6 6Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

It is typical buck passing to blame inanimate objects for the failure of not society, but the individual parents of kids who kill. You can blame guns, you can blame "society" but in the end it all boils down to the individual shirking responsibility.
Fifty years ago, it was commonplace for teens to bring guns to school during hunting season. Every boy carried a pocket knife. There were no shootings or stabbings. Now both of these inanimate objects are banned from possession on school grounds and shootings and stabbings are commonplace.
Fifty years ago one parent households and kids born out of wedlock were unusual. Now single parent families are common. Some 40% of white children, 60% of Hispanic and 75% of black kids are born to single parents. The only place it is still unusual is in Asian families. Do you think it's a coincidence that Asians have by far the lowest crime rate?

In the fifties the biggest complaint teachers had about student was finding gum under the desk top. My how things have changed.

And, in the fifties, little boys still played with guns and didn't get shot by the police for doing so. None of these boys ever even thought of going into a school and shooting people. I think they sort of listened to Roy Rogers on behavior. Different times.

Right on!!! What happened to that family bond?? When did it escape us??? Cant be that long ago as family was still important when I was growing up...

The need for two incomes to survive left our children unsupervised.. Left to run the streets with friends, gave into fast food in place of sitting down as a family etc...

Society acceptance is so liberal in comparison to just when we were growing up..divorce unheard of in my mothers era, now the first argument is a walk to divorce.. Abortion was not promoted it was hidden.. Drugs werent the killers they are now etc..

Is it no wonder we have a bunch of inconsiderate Millennials that feel entitled rather than earning their way??

We are in for some serious country break down if we cant get these young adults of ours on track like in yesterday!!

Teaching the love of God in the Holy Bible is good. Practice it in the family. Kids must NOT have too many sources of violent interactions with the internet, violent movies, and games. They learn so many bad behavior from there.
