Luke chapter 5

Verse 1 - 3

With the water at the lowest point and a gently sloping border, this would form a normal amphitheatre and Jesus’ voice would carry.

Verse 4 - 11

Peter was a commercial fisherman. He didn’t fish with a line, he used a net. Read Matthew 13:47 - 50. We are all sinners. Romans 3:23

Verse 12 - 15

Why would the leper say what he said? He knows Jesus can heal him but feels unworthy of the healing. All he can say is, ”if you want to, you can make me clean”. None of us are worthy of anything. Jesus doesn’t move because we are so good, but because He is so merciful. No one notices that scripture is coming alive.

Verse 16 & 17

Those that think they are saved already don’t need Jesus. The Pharisees and teachers aren’t coming to learn, they are coming to find fault.

Verse 18 - 20

The faith of the one being healed is not mentioned. Faith that does nothing is worthless. Faith without works is dead. Your faith should lead you to act.

Verse 21 - 26

God and Jesus can read your mind. One thing is as easy to say as the other. To Jesus, they are just words but God gives Jesus’ word power. God had the fish swim under the boat when Jesus said drop the net.

Verse 27 - 32

How Matthew, Peter, and John are mentioned in three gospels. As well as the fact that Peter was married. Only three disciples wrote books in the bible. Ironically they are Matthew, John, and Peter. Jesus was never interested in those that didn’t need Him. Only the sick need a doctor.

Verse 33 - 39

We don’t need to return to Christ, but to turn to Christ. The word translated bottles should have been translated wineskins. The main idea is it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Everything we learn after 30, is strained through the sieve of what we have accepted as truth earlier.
