Luke chapter 3

Verse 1 - 3

They were tetrarchs because Rome gave Herod and his brother five areas to rule apiece. Annas and Caiaphas were priests appointed by Rome, not God. God would get His message out starting with John the Baptist.

Verse 4 - 6

The scripture is found in Isaiah 40:3. This was written about 700 years before it actually happened. What God had planned for thousands of years is happening in front of everybody, but no one recognized it.. Christ will return like He left.

Verse 7 - 14

John’s was not a message of love and compromise. His was a message that everyone needed to repent because they were headed for destruction. It was not too late, they could change the way they lived their lives. Don’t be fooled by those that say God will heal and bless you if you support the church. God is more pleased with obedience over worship. If pleasing God is not your motivation, whatever you do will fail. If it is, no one can stop you. John’s message when followed had people being kind to one another. John didn’t tell soldiers that God was against war so they should leave the army, don’t use your position to be cruel.

Verse 15 - 18

In Malachi 4:5 God says He will send a prophet in the spirit of Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord. Some thought that John was Jesus. John assured them he wasn’t. When Jesus returns, He will divide society into an accepted pile and a group that may be rejected. Right now Christians are persecuted. Jesus will lift us up.

Verse 19 & 20

John was arrested and imprisoned for reproving Herod for sleeping with and taking his brother’s wife. The wife would later get the opportunity to have John killed. It is taught that God will protect those who please Him. These people don’t know what they are talking about. Acts 14:22 lets us know that God does not save from tribulation, He saves through tribulation. Was God pleased with John? Did John sin? What sin did John commit? The bible forbids sleeping with your brother’s wife. A man of God will stand for God’s word against popular opinion.

Verse 21 & 22

For those that don’t believe Jesus is God’s son, do you believe God? Six times in three gospels God calls Jesus His son. In John, Jesus calls God father and God answers audibly.

Verse 23 - 38

Jesus didn’t begin His ministry until He was 30. As was supposed means as by law. This is Mary’s genealogy. They are the same until David’s children. Joseph’s ancestor was Solomon. Mary’s was Nathan.
