Today in 1986, the Challenger exploded. I remember watching it on TV, as we had been rained out at work that day and I was home.
Today in 1915, the William P Frye, an American merchant ship, was sunk by the German navy, becoming the first American ship to be sunk by Germany in WWI. (Contrary to popular belief, the Lusitania was not an American ship, but was listed as an auxilliary warship of the British Navy. In an effort to avoid more US casualties, the German government gave repeated warning to Americans not to sail on this vessel. When the Lusitania was attacked and torpedoed, it sank quickly after the munitions it was also carrying exploded.
