When the words come up"bank heist",pictures of bandits with bandannas over their faces, holding up a bank, come to mind,or even the iconic image of Bonnie and Clyde with their guns and classic car. There's certainly a glamorous element to the notion of "bank heists",and the outlaws involved in these crimes have long captured our attention,The idea of someone living outside the law, escaping the clutches of authorities and amassing a fortune has made some great stories and legendary movies, with an element of idolization and fascination directed toward these criminals.

These days however, bank heists have have progressed far beyond the "Put your hands in the air" heists, and are carried out online by tech-whiz hackers and digital criminals, who steal identities and break into secure systems. But some of the biggest heists in history really did see criminals walking into the bank and grabbing the cash, without the use of technology, and in some cases ,getting completely away with it.

From Butch Cassidy to Sadaam Hussein, there have been some impressive heists , perhaps worthy of Hollywood movies.
Here are the ten biggest "heists"from all over the world.

#10
Loomis and Fargo Company(1997)--18 million
In March 1997 a Florida branch of this bank,an armored car driver used brawn instead of brains, overpowering two of his coworkers ,he made off with 18 million dollars,He stashed the cash in a storage shed in Carolina and tried to escape to Mexico. He was apprehended at the border crossing. He was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison,

#9-- Dunbar Armored
The Dunbar robbery is considered to be one of the largest heists in U S history. This was also an inside job,by Regional Safety Inspector,Allen Pace.He took pictures of the inside of the Los Angeles armored car depot, and with conspirators was able to dodge the security cameras, surprised and tied up the guards, grabbing the cash and making off in a u-haul truck. The robbers almost got away with the heist, but a broken tail light from the getaway truck led to Pace's arrest

#8 --Great Northern Bank(2002)--50 million
This heist was in Belfast,Ireland, and is considered one of the biggest heists in European history.Robbers disguised as police officers invaded the homes of two bank officials,Their families were held hostage, and the officials gave them access to the bank's vault. The UK government blamed the heist on the Irish Republican Army, but the IRC denied any knowledge of the incident. The heist still remains unsolved, although some arrests have been made. The bank was forced to recall 300 million in bank notes and reissue new notes of a different color

#7--Banco Central(2006)--69.8 million
This heist in Brazil is arguably one of the most creative heists in history. The robbers were able to steal almost 70 million dollars by tunneling under the bank ,The tunnel was over 250 feet long, not only did they dig the tunnel ,they connected lighting and air conditioning to let them work in comfort. The robbers took three months to complete the project. Some suspects have been apprehended, but not all of them, and only 9 million has been recovered from the heist

#6 Great Train Robbery(1963)--74 million

!6 robbers boarded a train called the "Night Flyer),The train was carrying "High Value Packets" and bank notes being sent to numerous banks in London, England,Since it was a Postal train, numerous banks were impacted by the theft, led by Bruce Reynolds. The robbers boarded the train when it was stopped by a rigged red light, they overpowered the staff in the "High Value Carriage"and left with the loot.People in other parts of the train didn't know the heist had taken place until someone discovered that the engine and two cars had disappeared.120 of the 128 mail bags were removed and the robbers made off with the loot. The seventeen criminals were eventually captured,

# 5 Securitas Depot (2006)--92.5 million

The largest cash robbery in British history,at the time it took place. The heist was in the city of Kent and lasted for several hours .It began when a number of men abducted the bank managers family, entered the bank and tied up the 14 staff members.forcing the bank manager to open the vault, they looted the bank.Leaving the hostages in the vault ,they escaped with the loot, but were eventually apprehended,

#4 Knightsbridge Security deposit (1987)--200 million
Led by a famous Italian criminal,Valerio Viccei, this heist was in July ,1987
The security deposit was known to have famous clients and patrons and had valuable relics attractive to a cunning criminal.Veccei closed the bank by threatening the bank manager with death,Once they had control of the bank, the gang ransacked it ,amassing 200 million in cash, jewelry and bank notes.Veccei almost got away with it but was arrested when he tried to return to his home to retrieve his valued Farrari

#3 British bank of the Middle East(1976)--210 million
This heist made history as it extended over a week. There was civil war in Beirut and Yasser Arrafat's Palistine Liberation organazation used brute force to gain access to the bank by blasting through a wall that was shared by a Catholic Church.Using the help of locksmiths, they cracked the vault and got away with 210 million in gold bars, stocks and notes and cash.

#2 Dar Es Salaam(2007)--282 million
This heist was accomplished overnight, and very quietly.Located in Baghdad it is considered the largest heist since the 2003 war started, and the culprits took advantage of the banks vulnerability. The money was stolen by security guards who slept in the bank at night. When the manager arrived for work the next morning the doors were open and the vault was empty, money and guards gone
no arrests were ever made

#1 Central Bank of Iraq(2003)--920 million

Starting on March 14th,the day before the U S started bombing Iraq, almost one billion was stolen from the bank during the course of several robberies. There were no masks,no guns and no hostages. The weapon used was a note, signed by Sadaam Hussein.
Sadaam had his son Qusay withdraw the money, which included boxes of 100 dollar bills (U S currency)stamped with a seal identifying them as security money. It took over five hours to load the loot onto trucks.Qusay was later killed in a skirmish with U S troops. The location of the loot remains a mystery.Technically, since Sadaam was then the ruler of Iraq, perhaps no laws were broken, though corruption was certainly involved. The removal of the money by Qusay is still considered robbery ,viewed by the attempt to hide the money that Hussein had obtained illegally from the citizens of Iraq

Boatbob2, go to YouTube and look @ Rumsfeld 9-10. Mr. Smirky knows that all he has to do is lie his butt off that day because tomorrow it will be forgotten news. Hope that helps.
