I'd like to get some feedback here. If you were going to go off the grid and live in the wilderness, what essential survival tools would you need? I'm not talking about comfort items. Just the bare essentials for survival. What items are a must have?

My list.

A good knife
A hatchet
some way to get or make clean safe drinking water
A gun or bow for hunting
Copper wire for snares
Warm clothes and shelter.

Depends HIGHLY on where you intend to go. Lots of planning and prepositioned supplies are a must,,,, you cannot just "bug out" to say,,, the Rockies or the airzona desert,,,,,

Get a water filter from Sportsmans guide or something with a ceramic filter,,,,,,,two 5 gallon buckets,,, for water filtering,,,

A 22 rifle for eating lots of ammo,,,,, Stainless wire,,, not copper.. I actually like "spider wire fishing line" many more uses

Do not bring a cell phone,,,, they can find you with it...even if you dont call

Actually, if there are no cellphone towers in range, they can't find you. I would bring my cellphone, and a solar charger. It's a great way to store important info about survival and other things, like maps, almanacs, survival guides...etc. Plus I have some really good games on it. I can rough it, but there ARE limits.

How about a tablet? Can they track those too? And isn't there a way to turn something off so they can't track you? Location services or GPS, or whatever. Failing that, is there a way to physically disable it?

From my experience with US intel targeting and bombing, against ISIS/Al Queda,,,, the only way I would have any phone or anything that gets on the internet,,, is if I was going to tie it to a tree in a kill zone,,,, and hit "send",,,,,, that way you can shoot who comes after you,,,,,,,

I know quite a few dead ISIS/Al Queda who wish they had left it home. I wont have one, if I want to disappear

What about encrypted VPN? Can the government track that? From what I've read, it extremely difficult. One VPN actually uses multiple random servers that do not 'remember' the previous server it's connected to.

If it transmits,,,,, they can track it,,,,,,,, like I said,, I was in the business,,,, and I wont have one if I want to disappear....

But it also depends on "why" they would want to bother with you in the first place,,,, without a reason,, there isnt much military use in tracking and fixing some guy who runs up in the mountains...... up to you,,,,

Uhh...I was thinking more along the lines of survival tools that will allow you to survive, and could easily carry with you. Personally, I believe that if a person has adequate survival skills, they can survive with nothing but a good knife.

if it is an I phone or a new Android,,, no,,,,, if its an old flip phone it can be turned off....... and doesnt communicate with the satellite...

GPS does 3 things, Positioning, navigation, and timing... it is the timing communication that gets you the other stuff is just mathematics of your position.
