Today in History, in 1789, the Judiciary Act of 1789 was passed by Congress and signed by President Washington. This act established the Supreme Court, originally comprised of six justices.

Most don't know this. When there's a vacancy on the court it's really not that big a deal. I sure wish they weren't picked for life.
