Hippocrates was right

no propaganda please Loc: moon orbiting the third rock from the sun

When you get sick, do you believe you’re being punished?

Are angry gods after you for something you did wrong?

That thought used to be the norm.

But the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates is credited as the first person to believe diseases are caused naturally… not because of superstition and vengeful gods.

Medicine in Hippocrates’ day didn’t rely on a deep understanding of human anatomy. Dissection of humans was forbidden. But he was a keen observer.

And one thing he noticed was the connection between the seasons and your health. People were sicker and unhappier in the winter months.

Today, we have a better understanding of how sunlight impacts your body. Things like regulating melatonin production. Sparking the creation of stem cells. And even impacting the strength of your bones.

But the strongest health boost you can get from the sun has to do with mood.

On days when you get more sun, your serotonin levels go up. When serotonin is high, you feel satisfied and calm.

When it goes down, you’re anxious and depressed.

And it doesn’t just happen in your brain. When your skin is exposed to UV light, it releases endorphins, another “feel good” chemical.

We’ve been so conditioned to fear skin cancer that we’re missing out on one of the best natural health enhancers there is.

I know when I get outside, whether it’s taking a walk or just reading a book, I feel better. Nothing zaps me more than spending an entire day cooped up.

Maybe I’ve never outgrown being a fidgety teenager. Or maybe I can just feel my serotonin levels bottoming out.

Either way, I’m a big believer in getting outside, for at least 30 minutes a day, hopefully more.

Has your doctor ever given you a “prescription” for sunshine? Yeah, mine hasn’t either.

We’ve learned a lot since “the Father of Medicine” was walking around outside in his toga.

And we’ve obviously forgotten a lot of smart, simple things too.

So am I, now that it has stopped raining. Time to get the last of the cabbage in so we can make saurkraut, then go out and do some training with Chaos and Zeus. We have not been hit with too much rain and are praying for those who are in Texas and Florida who have been hit. Due to arrive here this afternoon for a week or more are two friends from Florida who got out and need a place to stay with their 12 dogs. They brought their dog crates with them, and we have two large sheds within the fenced three acres so we can handle the dogs but need to go get dog food for them. So for an unknown period we will have 15 dogs here, 13 Welsh Terriers and two Cane Corso Mastiffs. Should be interesting!!!!

I was trained in modern medicine, but trained myself in holistic medicine as well, which I found to be an excellent adjunct profession. There is a wealth of help to be found from witch doctors ( sans the mysticism ), herb women and the like..............from which ALL modern medicine sprang. I can't count the number of times I was able to successfully treat an intractable condition, where modern medicine failed, with simple home remedies.

It's hard to get modern Doctors to seek natural remedies, because it makes them feel like their years of sacrifice and time spent in training to be diminished. I think this is backwards thinking, since it is my more modern training that let's me know which natural remedies might be more efficacious. I'm a firm believer in "old school" medicine, but then, I might be a little biased.

I agree with you, and we use natural methods when ever possible, and try to eat natural, unadulturated foods right from the garden or wholisticly raised eggs and goats milk. Much better that way.

I am a firm believer in using natural ingredients for all sorts of heath problems. Some I have tried and not worked but more have an positive effect to help what ails us.

I recall the era during which Big Pharma did much advertising mocking "grandma's remedies." In a while I noticed that they began incorporating these remedies in their own "pills." They wanted the public to believe that there were no natural remedies. How long has it been and what was the result of BP and the AMA coming down on the vitamin supplement business?

I recall an occasion when my husband had a sore throat. I recommended honey. He reported this to our internist. Next time I saw the Dr. he asked me what I would recommend for a problem he was having. I told him to take two aspirins and call me in the morning. I believe I've mentioned this earlier but, when a doctor was writing out a prescription, I would ask him what effect it would have. then I saw my acupuncturist and asked her which Chinese Herbal Remedy she would sell me. They work very well -- with no side effects.

Natural remedies are a threat to big Pharma, because they can't patent them. Home remedies are frowned upon by modern medicine, because they can't bill for it. See the pattern yet?

I think I've mentioned this before, but it's worth repeating. Several years ago a group of University scientists, both American and Swiss, investigated tribal witch doctors in Africa and discovered they had an effective cure for malaria. Not a treatment, which is all modern medicine has been able to accomplish - an actual, verifiable cure. It comes from a tea made from the leaves of a plant. Their findings were published and both Swiss and American pharma companies took the plant apart, looking for the active alkaloids, made pills using this formula..................all of which failed completely. They tried again two more times tweaking the formula, and failed again and again. Both countries pharma dropped the plant and the universities the project - because they couldn't find a way to make a profit. The two scientists were so disgusted with this behavior, they quit their jobs and began a program where every tribe was shown how to grow the plant, and how to prepare the tea.................and were sued by both American and Swiss authorities. The scientists got the last laugh though; they taught native personnel to do this, who kept the program going.

The day we decided that our health was a luxury item, subject to profit making schemes and dependent on the good will and proper behavior of corporations and Government committees.................is the day we became a third world country.
