They are tropical. When I was a kid, we would see them occasionally as the gulf streaam caried them north, Also the occasional hammer head shark, not seen this far north usually. Mako are common and, bw, are good tasting!

I was vacationing on Hutchison Island just above Port St Lucie Fla. We were in the ocean for a bit and then in the condo pool. We went into our condo and I turned on the news. A helicopter I had seen while I was in the water had videoed the ocean about fifty feet out from where I was swimming. Imagine my surprise when it showed twenty three hammerhead sharks circling just out of reach from where I was swimming. From above the water is transparent but at sea level you see nothing. I didn't do any more ocean swimming for the rest of that trip.

Hammerheads are mostly fish eaters and if they were circling they had schooled a pod of fish and were stuffing them selves. Tarpon fishermen have a tough time with great hammerheads as they love tarpon but have a hard time catching them. I've swum with them on occasion, not by choice, and not been bothered. Now the bull shark is another matter. If I know one is in the water even a good ways away and I'm out. Course that was when I was younger. I don't go in the ocean any more. Mike

The hammer on their heads are full of sensors that they use to find stingrays and flounder and other sand hiding fish. That's not to say they won't bite if messed with. Mike

It was that tasting part that kept me out of the ocean. I didn't fancy becoming a sharks's hors d'oeuvres. Who knows, they might have been hungry enough to say what the hell, it tastes lousy, but it's grub and eat all of me.
