What an amazing story.

During WWII a transport company of the Polish army discovered a half starved brown bear cub. They adopted it and nursed it back to health. They named him Voytek. He grew into a completely domesticated 500lb brown bear. One thing he liked to do was to imitate what the soldiers did. When the call came to fly to Italy to fight the Germans, they agonized over what to do with him. If they left him behind, he would die. But they didn't think it would be a good idea to take him along. Well, they finally decided to take him along. He was actually commissioned as a private. During a major battle, the troops were trying desperately to move enough ammo to the front lines. It was looking pretty grim. Then, to everyone's amazement, Voytek grabbed a heavy crate of ammo and started carrying it to the front. He continued to help his exhausted friends all night and was instrumental in winning the battle. He was promoted to Corporal. He was eventually retired and lived the rest of his life in a zoo. He died at the age of 22. How cool is that? A bear helping to fight Germans.

Kinda makes you aware of the fact that there is a whole lot of history that we've never heard. A lifetime isn't enough to learn it all.

Nope. It's true. Saw it on the History channel. They even had pictures of it carrying an ammo crate.

With both his maw and paw if he had two paws he wouldn't have been born because it takes a maw and a paw to produce a baby bear.

Calls to mind "Reckless", a Japanese pony left behind after their occupation of Korea. During the Korean "Police action" he was adopted into 5th marines to pack recoilless rifles and ammo,no easy task but accomplished to the end of the action and retired as a sergeant with decorations at Camp Pendleton California and only frequently was called out for parade duty. Reckless III ,I believe, is now carrying on. Animals are truly amazing in duty and loyalty. SEMPER FI and long life.

Two. He carried them just like the soldiers did. What's really amazing is that he kept it up all night, with enemy fire all around him. The troops swore that they wouldn't have made it without him. They simply wouldn't have been able to move enough ammo and would have been overrun.

How cool is this!!! Voytek named appropriately meaning he who enjoys war or joyful warrior...

A slightly different version I'll add this For you as well.. Doesn't matter where "he served", it's what he did that is so striking!!

Thank You for posting the positive rather than always reading about negatives...

He accompanied the bulk of the Polish Second Corps to Italy, serving with the 22nd Artillery Supply Company. During the Battle of Monte Cassino, in Italy in 1944, Wojtek helped move crates of ammunition and became a celebrity with visiting Allied generals and statesmen.

After the war, mustered out of the Polish Army, he was billeted, and lived out the rest of his life, at the Edinburgh Zoo.

The name "Wojtek" is a hypocorism (diminutive form) of "Wojciech", an old Slavic name that is still common in Poland today and means "he who enjoys war" or "joyful warrior".[2] Wojtek's Polish Army comrades referred to his species-of-origin as "Persian bear", and his full name on official documents was "Wojciech Perski" (Perski being the adjective, "Persian", in Polish).
