Pasta had not been invented. It was either macaroni or spaghetti.

Curry was a surname.

Taco? Never saw one 'till I was twenty-five.

Pizza? Sounded like a leaning tower somewhere.

Bananas and oranges only appeared at Christmas time.

All chips were plain.

Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking.

Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and never green.

Cubed sugar was regarded as posh.

Chickens didn't have fingers in those days.

None of us had ever heard of yogurt.

Healthy food consisted of anything edible.

Cooking outside was called camping.

Seaweed was not a recognized food.

'Kebab' was not even a word, never mind a food.

Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, and was regarded as being white gold.

Prunes were medicinal and stewed.

Surprisingly, muesli was readily available. It was called cattle feed.

Pineapples came in chunks or were round with a hole in the middle & in a tin; we had only seen a picture of a real one.

Water came out of the tap. If someone had suggested bottling it, and charging more than gasoline for it, they would have become a laughing stock.

There were three things that we never ever had on our table in the fifties...elbows, hats and cell phones!

And, there were always two choices for each meal..."Take it" or "Leave it."

Yep....and meat was for special occasions, unless you killed it, dressed it and cut it up yourself.

Remember when people knew the difference between their, there & they're, your, yore & you're, different took from not than, than took a subject such as he & not an object such as him, etc. (OK with that last I may be am a little too much but, for God's sake, can't we all (including me or I ?) edit our posts here a little better? It seems that with the proliferation of online exchanges there (notice) has been a deterioration of usage.

Seaweed was something you got on your hook while fishing that you would take off and throw away.

I thought I'd rechecked this & now find the incorrect 'AM a little too much.'

No one ever heard of gluten either,
And vegan was the Indian word for bad hunter.
Organic was soil mixed with manure, about the same as it means today.

Thank you, It drives me crazy that people here(hear) can't or don't use the proper words. I only have a High School education and was never good at English except Composition but I did learn the difference between what different words meant to express. I agree with Crazy people, correct yourself. By the way Crazy, I have brought this up before but didn't want to step on toes and didn't push it. Think I will in the future and would appreciate if you would too(to, two).

I am totally surprised by people who are definantly knowledgable and yet won't use the language correctly. I personally skirt around some words mostly because I can't figure out how to spell them but I do know the difference between same sounding words and their meanings. Synonyms. You and I can make a difference although there are probably more important things to deal with, this is a small way to improve all our lives that doesn't raise the National Deficit. Mike

People are funny; most don't like to be corrected about grammar and spelling. This doesn't bother me - we can always learn from others. Unfortunately, I see many errors, even in edited works such as books and magazines, and especially in newspapers. So what we read sets the standard, which has definitely declined. Add to the mix that Millennials text using their own shorthand and it is a wonder that anyone can spell correctly these days since English has more irregularity and exceptions than it has rules because it takes words from many languages. The funniest thing I have noticed about this is that educated people whose first language is not English often use our language more properly than we do.

I guess you won't mind then if I point out your misspelled words: definantly knowledgable should be spelled definitely knowledgeable.

Not when you can't make any sense whatsoever from all of the mistakes. A typo or slight grammatic error is one thing but I've seen posts that seemed like complete gobbledy-gook.

And if we can't communicate, we're lost.
