I can't say for sure what would have happened if a single payer system had been instituted here in America but I spent a number of years living in western countries that have single payer/ private pay-as-you-go hybrid systems (Australia, New Zealand, UK, Switzerland, Netherlands) These systems while not perfect are light years ahead of the dysfunctional mish mash we have here.
