The Poet: Lynn Ungar, “Hawks”

“Hawks”

“Surely, you too have longed for this-
to pour yourself out
on the rising circles of the air
to ride, unthinking,
on the flesh of emptiness.

Can you claim, in your civilized life,
that you have never leaned toward
the headlong dive, the snap of bones,
the chance to be so terrible,
so free from evil, beyond choice?

The air that they are riding
is the same breath as your own.
How could you not remember?
That same swift stillness binds
your cells in balance, rushes
through the pulsing circles of your blood.

Each breath proclaims it-
the flash of feathers, the chance to rest
on such a muscled quietness,
to be in that fierce presence,
wholly wind, wholly wild."

This brought to mind Googling John Denver's song, 'The Eagle And The Hawk,' again.

I was visiting a friend of mine the other day in the heart of the city, and heard a swooshing sound, turned around and saw this.

The look on his face, to me said, "put your phone down or you're next!'

Nope. I stepped behind a glass door and took a video as he devoured that pigeon. I tried to link the video here, but for some reason it won't let me. It was pretty cool to watch so close.

Awesome . Thanks .
We have an abundance of birds of prey here in the southwest . They do well here.
There is endless supplies of small critters here for them to survive very well on .
Always a pleasure to observe . Just started watching again after years of not doing so.

I had a great horned owl spend a few nights in one of my palm trees nestled down
in the cup of a dead prawn . It was here for several days . A rather large one . For
several days it would show up just before sun down and sing away till dark . Then
it would nestle down for a quick nap before the nigh hunt started I suppose. They are
bold here . I have a few stories of just how bold but won't bore you with them .
Suffice it to say they do not back down from much . Silent deadly hunters and incredible
to witness in flight when close by .

Thanks for the posting

Slatten has knowledge of what a couple of spoon fulls of Nuoc Mam and a dash of Tabasco can do
for just about anything . Including uneatable life forms found far beyond the average mans knowledge .

Having been (back home in Texas) raised accustomed to eating good southern-style ham and lima beans, I was aghast at the horror of the 'ham and mothers' we were issued as rations while in 'Nam. But, soon after arriving back home, I immediately had my grandmother fix her traditional style to help me forget one of the greatest fears we Marines had serving in the bush...those same 'ham & mothers.' Nothing on earth could season them enough to make them palatable for human consumption. Thankfully, we occasionally also were issued some pound-cake and peach rations to go with it. As I remember them, they were the creme-de-la-creme of C-rations.

I am about to post a thread devoted to the legacy of 'Ham & Mothers.' It will be titled 'A Grandfather's Story...'Ham & Mothers.'

My 13 year old brother decided he had to raise homing pigeons so he didn't cease with his pestering until my Father built him a large coop and they began acquiring birds. His interest lasted until the first time the coop had to be shoveled out and then they became my Father's hobby. Being practical and not so well off, every time there was a surplus of birds the flock was reduced, by culling a bunch for the cookpot. I was eating roast "squab" at an early age and spaghetti sauce made with pigeon is also delicious.

Damn Skippy Slatten!!!!! I know that many of us here on OPP that have been overseas in the fight have all eaten things that as I heard before would make a billy goat puke.HAHAHA. Its true though. Some Tabasco or Luisianna Hot Souce can make a great meal of just about anything thats for sure. Bamboo Bat was a favorite of ours along with other types kill went together great with a little seasoning!

Semper Fi

In 1954 I was pulling KP in the consolidated mess hall on Ft Dix while I was in Basic Training. One of the tasks assigned was to open the boxes of C-Rations and pull out the food cans for the once a week garbage meal. I came across a package of Lucky Strike Cigarettes but instead of the white package with a red circle it was a dark green package with a gold rim around the red circle. I remembered hearing commercials in the dim days of my childhood around 1942, "Lucky Strike Green Has Gone To War". Whatever program I was listening to repeated the phrase endlessly. I quickly appropriated the pack but I made the mistake of mentioning it to my barracks mates and it took just two days to be stolen.
