Lesson 18: Why People Reject Christ (John 3:19-21)

July 7, 2013

Picture a guy floating downstream on a raft on a hot summer day. He’s having the time of his life, enjoying the ride as the cool water gently splashes on him. You’re on the shore and you know that there’s a deadly waterfall not far downstream. This guy is floating blissfully and ignorantly toward certain destruction! So you yell to warn him. You throw him a rope. But he rejects it and keeps floating toward certain death. Why won’t he grab the life preserver? Because he loves what he’s doing and he doesn’t want to believe your warning.

Why do people reject God’s wonderful offer of salvation through Jesus Christ? You would think that everyone would eagerly grab the life preserver that God has thrown out through the gospel (John 3:16): “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Why would anyone reject such a wonderful offer? Why would anyone want to keep heading for eternal destruction? In our text, John shows us:

People reject Christ because they love their sin and they hate having it exposed by God’s light.

Thomas Jefferson wrote the Jefferson Bible which was titled: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth.

The Jefferson bible was actually a compilation of three different bible's from which he cut out anything that suggested Jesus was divine and instead presented Jesus Christ as just a man and nothing more. Now the question is--did Jefferson reject Christ or did he present him in the form that he really was?

I think there is ample evidence to suggest that Christ lived, taught, and ministered but there is zero evidence to suggest that Jesus was a god and more to suggest that we made him into what we wanted all along.

The rejection isn't of Christ but of his divinity. If you ask why--it's because there is no evidence that there is a god...

There IS evidence that ChristIDS God. John1:1 says. "In the beginning was the Word. and the Word was with God, and the Word was God". If you're a believer in God and believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, then that The Word says it should be enough to believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ. How could Jesus be merely a humaNn if He raised the dead and did numerous miraculous deeds? If you don't accept the Bible as true, read,"Evidence aThat Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell.

If you opened your eyes this morning, or listened carefully, or even went outside and felt around, you found absolute proof of God's existence.

Proof of God's existence is in every sunrise, sunset, ocean breeze, mountain stream, and desert basin. I've witnessed childbirth, children laughing and crying, and parents dying. God's presence was so intense that it was undeniable.

Leftists hate God because they want to be God, and be worshiped by us. Beg them for healthcare, food, clothing, and housing. They want the American people on their knees, palms up, waiting to be taken care of.

Knowing Christ is the Son of God only takes faith. Knowing of God's existence only takes honesty with one's self.

The resurrection of Christ and the lives and deaths of 10 of His disciples tell it all. Men do not die for something they know is a lie. I encourage everyone to read and see on the big screen Lee Strobel's book and movie "The Case for Christ".

I guess that's either Stalin or Marx has been quoted as saying, "Religion is the opiate of the masses". They knew that if people believed in God, they wouldn't fall for the dictators lies.

You cannot use the NT to prove the NT. Jesus did not perform miracles, he was a wizard/warlock and he learned that trade during the ten years he spent in Egypt in his childhood. People reject Jesus because they believe as I do, that he was not the Messiah or the son of God. It is possible to raise or resurrect the dead, but not after three days. The bottom line is that Jesus is dead and gone. If he had risen from the dead, he would be here. The God of Israel is the living God and earth is called the "land of the living". When God comes to the earth, he will live and rule on earth forever.

That isn't evidence. In fact, no body (since ascended to heaven, apparently) no evidence.

What miraculous deeds? Why doesn't any other historian of the period talk about miracles performed by Christ?

If you don't except excerpts from historians of the times and cross reference scripture that contradicts historic events claimed in the bible, what good is it to discuss anything with you at all?

People do not believe in God because it requires a lifetime comitt ment to something that is, to them, non-tangible. There is no immediate physical payoff. It is easier to just live life however you wish and make up your own rules as you go. It is easier to not think about why some things, good and bad, happen in this life, and just think "oh well, that's life".
Brings to mind my daughter in her high scbool years. She was into the Goth crap, and a natural extension of that was scorcery , etc.. The good thing to come out of that was she realized the Devil.aka Satan, was real. There was evil in the world. There was bad. And there was, by logic, also good in the world. If bad came from Satan, where did the good originate? Luck? How did so many good things happen to her in her life if only the Devil existed? These were questions we asked her to seriously consider. Why did things go so much better fo her when she approached them with a positive attitude? Why did she just feel better with a positive outlook? So there was, indeed, positive and negative, good and bad, dark and light. She, being anything but dumb, asked why bad things happen if God existed. We suggested that it might be because,as these are opposites, and they both exist, that there is a constant battle between them. She asked,"like a war?" "Where is this war? I can't see it! No one can!" We told her it cannot be seen because it is happening inside her, and everyone. It is happening with every good or bad decision you make. It is happening with ever good or.bad thing you do.
Now, years down the road, she gets it.

I've met some that do and some that don't.

CEOs are just people.
