Today in 1777, the Continental Congress officially adopted the Stars and Stripes, although the original field of stars was a circle of white stars on a blue field.
Trivia.... There is no official proof that Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag, although she may very well have done so. There are several affidavits from friends and family that she did this, and she WAS a flag maker, having sewn flags for various naval and commercial ships. (There ARE official proofs of these). She also attended the same church as George Washington did for a while, so she undoubtedly knew him.
