The former Champ Car and Formula 1 competitor had just run the two fastest laps of the day when he entered Turn 2 at 230 mph. That’s when his car snapped loose and he overcorrected, sending him into the outside SAFER Barrier protected wall.
He immediately lifted up his visor to signal that he was awake and alert to safety officials.
The 38-year-old Dale Coyne Racing driver was removed from his car and placed on a stretcher. From there, he was transported to Methodist Hospital in downtown Indianapolis. He was awake and alert according to IndyCar Series officials.
Bourdais had posted the fastest time in Friday practice and was considered one of the favorites for the pole. Time trials had been delayed until 4 p.m. due to thunderstorms in the area.

I don't know how they keep those cars on the track at all. Even the NASCAR stock cars go way to fast as far as I'm concerned and they are in the 100's of miles per hour. At over 200 mph it would scare the s**t out of me that is for sure. I pray that they patch him and that he heals fine.

Saw that live! It made me yell out loud! Unbelievable he was not killed. Truly a testimonial to how far racing has gone to make it safer for the drivers.
