The Lost Colony of Popham.
I'll bet you never heard of it. You have probably heard of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, in the 1580's. Not one of Sir Walter Raleigh's finer moments. His nephew had no better luck on the coast of Maine some twenty years later. The link below is the story of another failed colony that few people have heard of.

Good article Loki, this is a piece of history I had never heard of until now. It is amazing to realize that so much of our history is glossed over and never taught. Our educational system seems to be concerned only with firsts; the motivations for colonization and how much of actually occurred was goes untaught.
