In Memoriam: General James Ewell Brown Stuart

Born February 6, 1833, on "Laurel Hill" plantation, Patrick County, Virginia, James Ewell Brown (Jeb) Stuart graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1850 and received his commission in 1854. Rising to the rank of Captain.

As a regular United States Army officer, he participated in the capture of John Brown at Harpers Ferry in 1859. In that same year, he became Robert E. Lee's aide and resigned from the U.S. Army to be commissioned a lieutenant-colonel in the Virginia Infantry and captain of the Confederate Cavalry in 1861; soon receiving promotions to colonel of 1st Virginia Cavalry, brigadier general, and major general. He commanded a cavalry brigade (October 22, 1861 - July 28, 1862), a cavalry division (July 28, 1862 - September 9, 1863), and a cavalry corps (September 9, 1863 - May 11, 1864) in the Army of Northern Virginia. In May, 1863, he was temporarily in command of Jackson's 2nd Corps.

General Stuart was wounded at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, and died one day later on May 12, 1864.
