"He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do..."

How many Christians here have done "greater works" than Jesus? He raised the dead, cast out demons, made the blind to see, healed the sick, and rose from the dead. None of this is on my resume. Is it on yours? Are we just inadequate or not really Christians if we have not done "greater works"? What did Jesus mean in John12:14?

I have an opinion but I would love to hear yours. There are some tricks to his statement that need to be looked at first: do you know what they are?

When did Yeshua ever command you to call yourself a Christian?

All he ever asked of us was to believe.

Maybe its the fact that you call yourself a Christian, that inhibits your ability to perform miracles.

I once performed CPR, ON a dead man and brought him back to life.

It happened in Atlanta Georgia after my supervisor was struck by lightening.

I've never referred to myself as a Christian, because as a child I learned that the term "christian" was coined by the Romans that persecuted the followers of Yeshua.

It was used as a derogatory insult.

I am a believer.

I believed I could save my supervisors life and I did it.

There is public record of the incident and the man is alive and well this very day.

So yes, I have performed miracles.

What, then, are the greater works that Jesus’ followers are to perform? D. A. Carson (The Gospel According to John [Eerdmans/Apollos], p. 496) argues that the greater works are those done on the basis of Jesus’ death, resurrection, and exaltation. The greater works point to the power of the gospel to transform lives as it spread through the apostolic witness. Through Peter’s preaching on the Day of Pentecost, 3,000 were born again, probably more than Jesus saw converted during His entire ministry! The Book of Acts tells how the message kept spreading, first around Jerusalem, and eventually to the Gentiles around the Roman Empire. And now, we are very close to spreading the Gospel to the entire world.

I am one who was raised from the dead. I continue to live because of a device created by people who were likely Christians. Keeping me alive is a greater task than raising me from death.

Christ did not order Christians to do those things. He prophesied that they would do those things. They have.

Let me try to clarify the topic: "greater works" than Jesus. Not CPR or some device to revive or sustain someone. Think loaves and fishes, calming a storm, casting out demons, raising the dead, healing the blind, curing leprosy with a touch and so forth. But ask this question: are these the works of Jesus? Some try to make the term "greater works" to mean more multiple works. Hard to find any other explanation. But there is one.

I already explained this in a previous reply. Here it is again.

Thin. Jesus is the one who transforms souls, not Peter or anyone else. Spirit and grace are the active ingredients that spread the Gospel, not any book or testimony. There is something else that you are missing, and Mr. Carson as well.

I'm not referring to CPR. CPR doesn't help if one is dead, heart stopped, not breathing, eyes dilated. You insist that Jesus' miracles are at issue. Not only are some miraculous things being done by His followers but some of them are far beyond anything claimed for Jesus.

Jesus was not expecting supernatural escapades from His flock. He was expecting His words to be disseminated and lives to be affected beyond what He was able. As Jesus clearly stated, His concerns were "not of this world but of the next".
